NMAC VFR TFC PATTERN SMALL ACFT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID ACR AIRBUS ON FINAL APCH TO PDX.

Narrative

ESTABLISHED ON L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 10L AT PDX. TWR SAID THEY WOULD CALL MY TURN TO L BASE. TWR CALLED TURN TO L BASE; AND AFTER TURN; ASKED IF I HAD THE AIRBUS IN SIGHT THAT I WAS TO FOLLOW. I LOOKED AHEAD AND AROUND AND THEN SAW THE AIRBUS APCHING AT ABOUT 2 O'CLOCK! MY COURSE WAS TAKING ME RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. I IMMEDIATELY MADE A SHARP R TURN BACK TO DOWNWIND AND PASSED THE AIRBUS A FEW HUNDRED FT AWAY. AS WE GOT CLOSE; THE AIRBUS PLT CAME ON THE AIR AND SAID HE HAD A TFC ALERT. THEN LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW; SAW ME AND SAID; TO THE EFFECT; THAT SOME SMALL PLANE WAS FLYING RIGHT THROUGH THE LNDG PATTERN. I CAME ON AND SAID: NO; I WAS JUST TRYING TO GET BEHIND HIM TO LAND; WHICH THE TWR CONFIRMED ON THE RADIO. THE TWR TURNED ME TO BASE FOR TOO SOON AND BEFORE I HAD THE AIRBUS IN SIGHT. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE AIRBUS MAY FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT A NEAR MISS (TRUE); BUT WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE CIRCUMSTANCES. SUBSEQUENT LNDG WAS ROUTINE THOUGH I HAD TO SLOW WAY DOWN TO GET ANY REASONABLE WAKE TURB SEPARATION.
