R ENG FAILED; SEVERE VIBRATION; SHUT DOWN R ENG; DECLARED EMER; DIVERTED TO CLOSEST ARPT FOR EMER LNDG.

Narrative

WE WERE A SCHEDULED FLT DTW-ROC. AS WE STARTED OUR DSCNT THE R GENERATOR INOP-XTIE LOCKOUT; R AC BUS OFF ANNUNCIATOR LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. L SIDE OF COCKPIT WENT DARK. WHILE RUNNING THE CHKLIST; THE ACFT BEGAN VIBRATING. AT FIRST THE VIBRATION WAS MINOR; THEN QUICKLY BECAME SEVERE. THE R START VALVE ANNUNCIATOR ILLUMINATION AND PRESSURIZATION OUTFLOW VALVE DROVE FULL CLOSED. I SHUT R ENG DOWN; DECLARED EMER WITH THE ZOB; AND REQUESTED IMMEDIATE VECTORS TO BUF. ATC CTLRS AT CLE; APCH CTL; AND BUF TWR WERE SUPERB. SUSPECTING POSSIBLE DAMAGE; WE DELAYED LNDG TO RUN CHKS BUT ATC COOPERATED FULLY. THE APCH AND LNDG WERE IN VFR CONDITIONS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 297650: DC-9-30 EXPERIENCED R GENERATOR FAILURE AND AC BUS LOCKOUT. STARTED APU TO REGAIN NORMAL ELECTRICAL PWR. SUBSEQUENTLY FELT ACFT VIBRATION ACCOMPANIED BY START VALE OPEN INDICATION AND R ENG. SECURED R ENG AND GOT VECTORS TO BUFFALO WHILE COMPLETING EMER CHKLIST AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT IN BUFFALO. POSTFLT REVEALED DAMAGED CCONSTANT SPD DRIVE AND GENERATOR UNIT. ON NEXT DAY; UNRELATED FLT; FOUND ACFT TO BE LEAKING CONSTANT SPD DRIVE FLUID OUT OF R ENG. FLT WAS CANCELED FOR MAINT DELAY.
