Narrative

APCHING SAN DIEGO MONTGOMERY FIELD (MYF) FROM THE N; ESTIMATED POS AS CLR OF CLASS 'B' AIRSPACE E OF MIRAMAR. I WAS USING WHAT I THOUGHT WAS SAN VINCENTE RESOVOIR TO DETERMINE POS. I CROSSED OVER SAN DIEGO'S GILLESPIE FIELD (SEE) AND MADE A STRAIGHT-IN APCH AND LNDG. I WAS THEN NOTIFIED THAT I SHOULD CONTACT SAN DIEGO APCH BY PHONE. UPON CONTACTING SAN DIEGO APCH I WAS TOLD THAT A NEAR MISS HAD BEEN OBSERVED ON RADAR AND A POSITIVE IDENT HAD BEEN MADE. I EXPLAINED THAT I THOUGHT I WAS IN THE CORRECT POS; BUT THAT I MAY HAVE MISTAKEN MIRAMAR RESOVOIR FOR SAN VINCENTE RESOVOIR. UPON REFLECTION; I AM QUITE SURE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. I WAS INFORMED THAT SAN DIEGO APCH WOULD CONTACT THE NAVY PLT IN THE OTHER PLANE INVOLVED (AN F18) TO SEE IF HE WISHED TO FILE A NEAR MISS RPT. I WAS TOLD (ASKED) TO CALL BACK LATER THAT MORNING; AND THAT IF THE PLT DID NOT WISH TO FILE; HE WOULD JUST AS SOON CHALK IT UP AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE. UPON CALLING BACK LATER; I WAS INFORMED THAT THE F18 PLT HAD ME IN SIGHT FROM A SAFE DISTANCE AND THAT I HAD PRESENTED NOTHING MORE THAN AN INCONVENIENCE AND NOT A SAFETY HAZARD AND AS FAR AS THE FAA (SAN DIEGO APCH) WAS CONCERNED; IT WAS A CLOSED INCIDENT. NO ACCIDENT WAS INVOLVED IN THIS INCIDENT.
