AN SMA PLT WOULD LIKE THE NAVY TO GIVE UP SOME OF R-2505.

Narrative

I HAD CROSSED THE SIERRAS W TO E NEAR WALKER PASS AND WAS FLYING NW ALONG EASTERN FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA; CLR OF THE CHINA LAKE RESTR AREA. I MAINTAINED CLRNC FROM THE RESTR AREA BY KEEPING THE HWY THAT DEFINES THE WESTERN BOUNDARY VISIBLE TO MY R. SUDDEN SEVERE TURB FORCED ME TO FOCUS COMPLETELY ON CTLING THE ACFT; AND I FOUND WHEN I RECOVERED; THAT I COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD TO MY R. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED L TOWARD THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA AND AWAY FROM THE RESTR AREA. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT I MADE AN INADVERTENT INCURSION INTO THE RESTR AREA. I CANNOT CONFIRM THAT THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE THE HWY DEFINING THE WESTERN EDGE OF THIS AREA NEVER APPEARED TO MY L. IMMEDIATELY UPON MAKING THE LEFTWARD COURSE ADJUSTMENT; THE HWY REAPPEARED TO MY R. IF AN INCURSION OCCURRED; I ESTIMATE IT WAS NO MORE THAN 500 FT INTO THE RESTR AREA AND FOR A TOTAL DURATION OF LESS THAN 1 MIN. WHAT CAUSED THE PROB WAS SUDDEN SEVERE TURB WHILE I WAS IN CLOSE PROX TO THE RESTR AIRSPACE AROUND CHINA LAKE. IT IS UNSAFE TO FLY CLOSER TO THE FOOTHILLS THAN WHERE I WAS BEFORE THE POSSIBLE INCURSION. I REQUEST THAT THE BOUNDARY OF THE RESTR AIRSPACE BE MOVED SEVERAL MI E TO PROVIDE GREATER CLRNC BOTH FROM THE SIERRAS AND FROM THE RESTR AIRSPACE.
