ACFT DAMAGED BY HAIL WHILE AT STATION. WALK AROUND INSPECTION FAILS TO CATCH THE DAMAGE AT DEP ARPT; FOUND LATER AT DEST ARPT. LOGBOOK ENTRY NO MADE REGARDING INSPECTION.

Narrative

WE LANDED IN LUBBOCK; TX. WHILE BOARDING FLT TO RETURN TO DALLAS; A VERY INTENSE TSTM MOVED OVER FIELD. BEGAN TO HAIL AND RAIN. HAIL ABOUT 1/2 INCH BECAME INTENSE FOR ABOUT 5 MINS. WHEN HAIL STOPPED I ASKED A NON REVENUE MECH TO CHK OVER ACFT FOR DAMAGE. HE AND COPLT INSPECTED ACFT WHILE I WAS ON PHONE TO DISPATCH (OUR BOOKS DO NOT REQUIRE ANY INSPECTION BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS PRUDENT TO DO SO). MECH AND FO RPTED 'NO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO ACFT.' THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T SEE THE TOP OF WING BUT LEADING EDGES; ETC; WERE ALL FINE. WE FLEW ACFT TO DALLAS. ENRTE I ASKED MECH TO NOTE HIS INSPECTION IN BOOK FOR ME. HE BALKED AND SAID HE COULD NOT BECAUSE HE WAS NOT REALLY 'ON DUTY.' I WAS MAD AND REQUESTED FOLLOW-UP INSPECTION BY MAINT ON ARR IN DALLAS. MAINT IN DALLAS FOUND NUMEROUS HAIL DINGS ON UPPER SURFACES; ESPECIALLY TRAILING EDGE FLAPS! (DAMAGE INFLT IS ON LEADING EDGES; DAMAGE ON GND IS ALWAYS ON THIN UPPER SURFACES.) WE WROTE UP DAMAGE AND CHANGED ACFT IN DALLAS TO CONTINUE TRIP. I FELT I HAD BEEN OPERATING A SAFE ACFT AND WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY DAMAGE TO ACFT PRIOR TO OR DURING FLT. (I HAD TRIED TO MAKE SURE IN FACT THAT THERE WAS NO DAMAGE; BUT MECH HAD NOT INSPECTED PROPERLY.)
