Synopsis

NMAC AT NON TWR ARPT WITH 1 ACFT BACK TAXIING AND 1 IN THE PATTERN; LNDG.

Narrative

AS I PREPARED TO BACK TAXI THE RWY FOR TKOF (THE TXWY DOESN'T EXTEND TO THAT END OF THE RWY) I OBSERVED A SMALL BIPLANE (PROBABLY A PITTS) MAKE AN ATTEMPTED TOUCH AND GO WHICH I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE AS A HIGH SPD RICOCHET FROM THE PAVEMENT. ANOTHER AIRPLANE DEPARTED; THEN I CLRED THE AREA AND ANNOUNCED MY BACK TAXI. THE SECOND AIRPLANE CALLED AND ADVISED ME THAT A SMALL BIPLANE IN THE PATTERN APPARENTLY WAS NORDO. I CLRED FINAL; BASE AND THE LOWER PART OF DOWNWIND; AND BEGAN THE BACK TAXI. PART WAY DOWN THE RWY; I SAW THE BIPLANE ON DOWNWIND. THE BIPLANE; JUST PAST THE END OF THE RWY; BEGAN AN ABBREVIATED APCH; CONSISTING OF A 30-40 DEG BANK; 180 DEG TURN THROUGH BASE TO FINAL; EVIDENTLY NOT SEEING ME ON THE RWY. ON FINAL; I BELIEVED THE BIPLANE PLT COULD NOT SEE THE APCH END OF THE RWY DUE TO THE RAISED COWLING. MY TAXI AT THIS POINT HAD GONE TO HIGH SPD; WITH MY TAILWHEEL OFF THE GND. I DROPPED THE TAILWHEEL AGAIN AS I TURNED OFF THE RWY INTO THE TURNAROUND. THE BIPLANE TOUCHED DOWN IN THE FIRST 1000 FT OF RWY 2-3 SECONDS AFTER I CLRED INTO THE TURNAROUND. I LATER LEARNED THAT THE ACFT WHICH RADIOED THE WARNING HAD TO TAXI OUT OF TKOF POS BACK INTO THE TURNAROUND WHEN THE BIPLANE MADE THE SAME KIND OF APCH AT HIM. I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE STAYED TO HAVE A TALK WITH THE BIPLANE PLT; BUT I HAD A STUDENT AT MY HOME ARPT AND HAD TO GET BACK THERE. I AM WORKING THAT ISSUE THROUGH INSTRUCTORS I KNOW AT THAT ARPT. FOR MY PART; I AM GOING TO GIVE A WIDER BERTH TO ANY ACFT I OBSERVE FLYING STRANGELY.
