DEV FROM CLRNC RTE -- THIS ACR MISSED A TURN WHILE TAXIING AND CROSSED A HOLD LINE TO A RWY. NO INTERFERENCE WITH OTHER ACFT.

Narrative

CLRED TO TAXI TO THE RAMP AREA AFTER LNDG ON RWY 32 AT PITTSBURGH VIA TXWY N-N; -V-V4 TO RAMP CTL. WHILE PROCEEDING UP N TO N1 I THOUGHT N1 WAS THE SECOND L BASED ON MY TAXIING. EXPERIENCE FROM THE TERMINAL TO RWY 28R. WHILE TAXIING UP TXWY N I PASSED THE FIRST 45 DEG L TURN AND NOTICED THE RWY HOLD SHORT MARKINGS DIRECTLY AHEAD AND AT THE SAME TIME THE FO ADVISED THAT TXWY N1 WAS ON L AS I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED 10-15 FT OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND THE FO ADVISED GND CTL AND ASKED PERMISSION TO MAKE A L TURN TO RE-ENTER TXWY N1. GND CTL ADVISED THAT WE HOLD POS AND AN F-100 LANDED ABOUT 15 SECONDS AFTER. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO TAXI VIA A SHORT 135 DEG TURN; STILL SHORT OF THE RWY AND TAXI VIA TXWY N1; TXWYS V; D; D1; RAMP. ALTHOUGH OTHER HOLD SHORT LINES ON THE ARPT ARE EQUIPPED WITH FLASHING YELLOW LIGHTS THIS ENTRANCE; LOCATED AT THE APCH END OF RWY 28R HAS NONE. AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED I WAS TAXIING VIA THE ASSIGNED RTE TO THE RAMP AND NO RWY XING WERE TO BE INVOLVED. MY INTERESTS WERE DIRECTED AT A TIMELY ARR AT THE GATE VIA THE ASSIGNED RTE. THIS SMALL; BUT SIGNIFICANT; INFRACTION BY MY MIS-JUDGEMENT EXCEEDED THE CONFINES OF THE PAINTED LINE; BUT DID NOT JEOPARDIZE THE SAFETY OF THE RWY ENVIRONMENT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THIS FLC WAS FLYING A B737-300 AND HAD LANDED ON RWY 32 AT PIT AND TAXIED TO THE END. THEY WERE THEN GIVEN A RATHER LONG TAXI RTE TO THEIR GATE. TXWY 'N' IS AN UPHILL TXWY AND THE TRANSITION RTES AT THE TOP OF THE HILL ARE NOT VISIBLE UNTIL SHORTLY BEFORE ONE REACHES THE CREST OF THE HILL. THE FO SAID THAT AS THEY PASSED THE CORRECT TURNOFF HE STARTED TO TELL THE CAPT ABOUT HIS OVERSHOOT; BUT WITH THE FIRST SOUND FROM HIM THE CAPT STOPPED THE ACFT. THEY THEN INFORMED THE GND CTLR AND HE CONFIRMED THAT THEY WERE NOT INTERFERING BY HOLDING AT THAT POS.
