HELI ENTERS RESTR AREA WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative

ENRTE FROM STAMFORD HELIPORT TO MONTICELLO (SULLIVAN COUNTY) I NOTICED R5206 DEPICTED ON THE MOVING MAP DISPLAY AND I COMMENTED ON HOW HELPFUL THAT WAS. BECAUSE WE WERE ALREADY PRETTY CLOSE TO THE AREA AND HDG RIGHT FOR THE MIDDLE OF IT; THE PIC DID NOT WANT TO TURN A FULL 90 DEGS AND ALARM THE PAX SO HE OPTED TO CUT THE CORNER A LITTLE BIT. HE ALSO COMMENTED THAT IT WOULD NOT BE HOT THIS TIME OF YR. UNFORTUNATELY; AS WE WERE FLYING DIRECTLY OVER WHAT APPEARED TO BE A GUNNERY RANGE; I NOTICED SEVERAL PEOPLE IN MIL UNIFORMS. AFTER CHKING THE CHART; I FOUND THAT THE AREA WAS ACTIVE AT THE TIME WE FLEW THROUGH IT. I AM A FIXED WING PLT WHO IS CURRENTLY IN HELI TRAINING. I THINK AS WITH MOST INCIDENTS THERE WAS MULTIPLE CAUSES: 1) INCREASED WORKLOAD AS A RESULT OF PLT TRAINING AND DETERIORATING WX. 2) DECREASED ASSERTIVENESS ON MY PART AS A RESULT OF A FOREIGN ENVIRONMENT. 3) PUTTING THE PAX COMFORT ABOVE MAY BE A POTENTIAL HAZARD. 4) A LITTLE COMPLACENCY ON THE HIGHLY EXPERIENCED CAPT'S PART; I THINK WAS FURTHERED BY THE FACT THAT THIS PARTICULAR RESTR AREA IS ONLY ACTIVE FOR 1 MONTH OUT OF THE YR. I THINK IN THE FUTURE I WILL TRY TO BE MORE COGNIZANT OF AIRSPACE AND BRING IT TO THE CAPT'S ATTN SOONER SO THAT HE WILL HAVE MORE TIME TO MAKE A DECISION. I WILL ALSO VOICE MORE OF AN OPINION ABOUT UNAUTH ENTRY INTO RESTR AIRSPACE.
