Synopsis

A LIGHT ACFT ENTERED CLASS 'D' AIRSPACE WITHOUT ESTABLISHING 2-WAY COMS WITH THE ARPT NFCT.

Narrative

WHILE CRUISING AT 2500 FT MSL FROM ROME; GA; (RMG) TO PEACHTREE DEKALB; MY RTE TOOK ME THROUGH THE N EDGE OF THE NEW CLASS 'D' AIRSPACE ASSOCIATED WITH MCCOLLUM FIELD (RYY) WHERE A TWR WAS RECENTLY ESTABLISHED. THIS AIRSPACE IS NOT REFLECTED ON THE LOW LEVEL SECTIONAL (ATLANTA) THAT IS CURRENT UNTIL SEP/THU/95. WHILE ABREAST OF THE ARPT ABOUT 2-3 MI N OF THE ARPT; I RECALLED HEARING THAT A TWR HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED RECENTLY. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED N AND PROCEEDED TO A DISTANCE OF 5 MI FROM THE ARPT BEFORE RESUMING ON COURSE TO PDK. I OBSERVED NO ACFT OPERATING ANYWHERE IN THE VICINITY OF MCCOLLUM (RYY). THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED BECAUSE I HAD NOT SEEN ANY WRITTEN MATERIAL ABOUT NEW CLASS 'D' AIRSPACE AND IT IS NOT ON THE CHART. I WOULD NOT HAVE REMEMBERED AT ALL EXCEPT THAT I COULD SEE THE NEW TWR ON THE GND. I WAS MONITORING THE CTAF (122.7) PUBLISHED ON THE SECTIONAL. ON RETURNING HOME; I NOTED THAT A TWR WITH FREQ 125.9 IS LISTED IN THE LATEST ARPT FACILITY DIRECTORY. PERHAPS; IN ADDITION TO NOTAMS; FLYERS SHOULD BE SENT TO FBO'S IN THE VICINITY (SAY 150 MI) OF NEW CTLED AIRSPACE.
