DURING DEP; THE PVT PLT OF AN SMA SEL WAS OUT OF COM WITH ATC DUE TO MISS SETTING COM FREQ.

Narrative

BOSTON DEP CLRED TO HDG 220 DEGS AND 3000 FT; KEPT TURNING L; THEN BOSTON ASKED HDG AND SAID TO TURN R 220 DEGS TO BOSOX; TURNED TO 220 DEGS AND CONTINUED CLBING. BOSTON ALSO GAVE NEXT FREQ OF 133.0. CONCENTRATED ON VERIFYING THE BOSOX INTXN SETTING CORRECTLY PUT IN RNAV (DONE PRIOR ON GND) BUT THE RESULT DIDN'T SEEM TO BE RIGHT ON THE HSI. ALSO BELIEVED THAT I SET THE NEW COM FREQ AND CHKED IN. THE RESOLUTION OF THE HSI; AND RNAV TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH DIRECTION TOOK SEVERAL MINS. PLT LEVELED THE PLANE AT 3000 FT. DURING THE LATTER PART OF THIS TIME; THE PLT BEGAN TO NOTICE THAT THERE WAS NO RADIO TFC. NOTHING DONE IMMEDIATELY; STILL WORKING ON THE BOSOX INTXN. THEN THE PLT NOTICED THE ACTIVE FREQ ON THE FLIP FLOP RADIO FRONT END WAS 130.0 INSTEAD OF 133.0 AS WRITTEN ON HIS CLIPBOARD BY THE PLT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE RADIO WAS RESET TO 133.0 AND CONTACT WITH DEP WAS ESTABLISHED. A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF WHAT HAD HAPPENED TRANSPIRED INCLUDING AN ADMONITION BY THE CTLR THAT 20 MI OF NO RADIO CONTACT ON DEP WAS UNACCEPTABLE. THE PLT AGREED. THE PLT OFFERED AN UNCLR EXPLANATION OF THE RADIO TROUBLES AND INDICATED THAT THEY WERE LIKELY DUE TO MISSET RADIO. THE FLT WAS CLRED TO 6000 FT AS FILED AND VECTOR REFINED FOR BOSOX. THAT WAS THE END OF THE EVENT.
