PVT PLT OF AN SMA MAY HAVE INADVERTENTLY PENETRATED CLASS B AIRSPACE DURING CLBOUT.

Narrative

DEPARTED EQY ARPT ENRTE TO SW; CROSSED NC18 AND LKR ARPTS SWBOUND. CROSSED NC18 AT APPROX 2600 FT MSL IN LEVEL FLT. CHARLOTTE CLASS B FLOOR IN THIS AREA IS 3600 FT MSL. SHORTLY AFTER XING NC18; BEGAN CLB; UPON XING LKR; ALT WAS APPROX 4000 FT MSL. CLB LEVELED OFF AT 6500 FT MSL SW OF LKR FOR VFR CRUISE; POSSIBLE CLASS B VIOLATION OCCURRED AS I CLBED BTWN NC18 AND LKR. THE CLASS B AREA ENDS APPROX 5 NM SW OF NC18; AFTER A BRIEF SEGMENT OF AIRSPACE WHERE THE FLOOR RISES TO 6000 FT MSL. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT WHEN I CLBED BTWN LKR AND NC18; I MAY HAVE 'KNICKED' THE EXTREME EDGE OF THE CLASS B WHEN I CLBED THROUGH 3600 FT MSL. I COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE CLASS B WITHOUT CLRNC FOR 1-3 MI BEFORE GOING INTO THE SECTION OF AIRSPACE WHERE CLASS B RISES TO 6000 FT MSL. I SHOULD HAVE DELAYED STARTING MY CLB FROM 2600 FT MSL UNTIL A POINT CLOSER TO LKR AND THERE WOULD BE NO QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER I HAD OR HAD NOT COMMITTED A DEV. I FLY THE AREA FREQUENTLY AND KNOW BETTER. I TOOK FOR GRANTED THAT I KNOW THE CLASS B LIMITS BY MEMORY; AND I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONSTANTLY CONSULTING MY CHART AND XCHKING MY POS. A LESSON LEARNED IS THAT EVEN IN A FAMILIAR AREA; YOU MUST BE DILIGENT AND TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED.
