Narrative
WINDSHEAR AT DFW RWY 17L. ARRIVED AT DFW FROM THE BLUE RIDGE ARR. HELD AT CONNY INTXN FOR APPROX 20 MINS. CONTINUED THE BLUE RIDGE ARR FOR LNDG ON RWY 17L AT DFW. WHILE BEING VECTORED TO FINAL APCH RWY 17L WE NOTICED AN APCHING LINE OF SEVERE TSTMS FROM THE NW. ON VISUAL APCH TO RWY 17L; INSIDE THE MARKER; AND ON TWR FREQ WE RECEIVED A LLWS ALERT FROM DFW TWR. WINDS WERE IN EXCESS OF XWIND AND TAILWIND LIMITS FOR THE S80 ACFT AND A GAR WAS INITIATED AT APPROX 500 FT AGL. TWR INSTRUCTIONS WERE; TURN L TO HDG 150 DEGS; CLB TO 3000 FT; AND CONTACT DEP ON 118.55. PASSING 1000 FT AGL WE ENCOUNTERED A SEVERE WINDSHEAR; WITH AIRSPD INCREASE OF 50 KTS AND AN UNSOLICITED CLB OF 3000 FPM. WE INITIATED THE WINDSHEAR ESCAPE MANEUVER. COPLT CALLED OUT APCHING 3000 FT. AT THAT TIME WE WERE UNABLE TO LEVEL AT THAT ALT AND I TOLD THE FO TO TELL DEP THAT WE WERE UNABLE TO LEVEL AT 3000 FT AND REQUEST HIGHER. DEP SAID CLB TO 6000 FT. ACFT CTL WAS REGAINED AT APPROX 4500 FT AND A CTLED CLB CONTINUED TO 6000 FT. NOTE: THIS WAS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF WINDSHEAR BEING AT THE LEADING EDGE OF AN APCHING COLD FRONT. WE ONLY ENCOUNTERED THE UPDRAFT AND HIGH AIRSPD PORTION OF THE WINDSHEAR; AND THANKS TO PAST SIMULATOR TRAINING WERE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE AND ESCAPE THIS POSSIBLY DANGEROUS SIT. WE DEPARTED THE HOLDING FIX WITH MORE THAN REQUIRED APCH; RESERVE; AND ALTERNATE FUEL. A SEVERE LINE OF TSTMS WERE APCHING DFW FROM THE NW. AS WE TURNED FINAL ON RWY 17L WE WERE UNABLE TO LAND DUE TO WINDSHEAR AND EXCESS WIND VELOCITY. A GAR WAS INITIATED AND THE FIELD WAS CLOSED AFTER. LOVE FIELD WAS NOT CONSIDERED AN ALTERNATE DUE TO ITS CLOSE PROX TO THE APCHING STORM SYS. ON GAR DEP; WE REQUESTED VECTORS TO DIRECT AUSTIN. AFTER NUMEROUS TURNS; SPD RESTRS; AND A HEADWIND OF OVER 70 KTS AT ALT; OUR FUEL CONSUMPTION WAS HIGHER THAN NORMAL. AT APPROX 65 MI FROM AUSTIN; AND 4000 LBS OF FUEL REMAINING; WE DECLARED MINIMUM FUEL AND REQUESTED DIRECT TO THE AUSTIN OM FOR RWY 13R. UPON ARRIVING ON FINAL FOR RWY 13R; A WINDSHEAR ALERT WAS ADVISED AND AN OBVIOUS WIND-SHIFT HAD BEGAN. WITH THE WIND OUT OF LIMITS FOR LNDG ON RWY 13R; WE REQUESTED A CIRCLE-TO-LAND RWY 31L. TOUCHDOWN FUEL AT AUSTIN WAS 2400 LBS.
