Narrative
ATIS RPTED LIGHT FREEZING RAIN. WHILE ON APCH TO RWY 36L AT CLT; ACFT BEHIND US ASKED TWR IS THEY WERE RPTING FREEZING RAIN. THE TWR CTLR SAID YES. WE WERE NEVER ADVISED OF THE CHANGE FROM (ZR MINUS) TO (ZR). OUR MD80 WAS CLEAN OF ANY ICE; SO WE CONTINUED OUR LNDG. ACFT BEHIND US; WENT AROUND. THE ONLY RPT OF (ZR) WE HEARD WAS FROM ACFT BEHIND US. WE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO QUESTION THE CTLR AS TO WHAT HE REALLY MEANT; (ZR) OR (ZR MINUS); SEEING THAT SAFETY OF FLT WAS NOT AFFECTED; WE CONTINUED OUR LNDG. WE DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY FREEZING RAIN; EVEN ON OUR TAXI TO GATE. BRAKING ACTION WAS RPTED AS GOOD. I BELIEVE TWR SHOULD HAVE ADVISED US OF ANY CHANGE IN WX FROM RPTED ATIS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR AND HIS CAPT HAVE REVIEWED THEIR ACR'S OPERATING MANUAL AND AGREE THAT THEY OPERATED CORRECTLY. THEY SUBMITTED RPTS BECAUSE THEY HAD AN ATC TYPE FAA EMPLOYEE ON THEIR JUMP SEAT WHO NIGHT HAVE HAD SECOND THOUGHTS. THE ACFT FOLLOWING THE RPTR ABORTED ITS LNDG AND THIS WAS NOTED ON THE LCL TV NEWS WITHIN 2 HRS AFTER THE RPTR'S SUCCESSFUL LNDG. THERE WAS NO COMMENT FROM THE CLT ATCT THAT THERE HAD BEEN A CHANGE IN THE ATIS OR THAT THERE WAS ANY HAZARD OR CHANGE FROM LIGHT FREEZING RAIN.
