PLT HAS DIFFICULTY FINDING PROPER TXWY AND RWY IN MONTREAL.

Narrative

RAMP CTL GAVE ME CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 28 SHORT OF TXWY A4 AND APCHING THE RWY SWITCHED ME TO GND WHO I BELIEVE SAID TAXI VIA TXWY A4 INTO POS AND WAIT ON RWY 28. I'D TAXIED PAST 2 POORLY AND UNLIGHTED TAXI AREAS AND QUERIED GND IF I WAS TO CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR RWY 28; AS FAR IN THE DISTANCE I SAW AN ACFT ON RWY 24L AND I FELT I WAS NEARING THE APCH END ON RWY 6R. I WAS CLOSE TO RWY 6R AND GND CALMLY STATED TO DO A 180 DEG AND TAKE MY FIRST HARD R TO TAXI INTO POS AND WAIT ON RWY 28. THE TXWYS AND MARKINGS WERE VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE AND WERE ONLY VISIBLE FROM MY LNDG AND TAXI LIGHTS. THERE WAS AN ARPT MAINT VEHICLE NEARBY WITH BRIGHT LIGHTS WORSENING THE MATTER. I REALIZE THAT MANY PECULIARITIES EXIST WITH CANADIAN OPS; BUT THE LACK OF GOOD MARKINGS IS A PROB IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES. WITH ALL THE ATTN FOR STANDARDIZED INTL OPS THERE'S STILL A LONG WAY TO GO 'WEEDING' OUT ARPTS WHO ENJOY BEING UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT WITH THEIR GND FACILITIES. I THINK A REAL GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS PROB IS EITHER NEWARK OR LAGUARDIA WHICH STILL USE 'REFLECTION' POLES AS TAXI MARKINGS WHICH IN REDUCED NIGHT VISIBILITY ARE NEARLY USELESS.
