WHILE ON A XCOUNTRY TRAINING FLT AN INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT WERE UNABLE TO CONTACT THE TWR WHILE INBOUND; BUT LANDED ANYWAY. AFTER LNDG; THE INSTRUCTOR PLT DISCOVERED THAT THE STUDENT HAD SET THE WRONG FREQ. UNAUTH PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE.

Narrative

MY STUDENT DID THE FLT PLAN FOR THE XCOUNTRY TO TYLER POUNDS FROM WILLSPOINT. I CHKED THE OVERALL PLANS AND WE PROCEEDED TO FLY. ABOUT 10 MI OUT WE SWITCHED THE RADIO TO ATIS BROADCAST TO GET OUR INFO FOR OUR APCH AND TWR FREQ. THE ATIS BROADCAST DID NOT GIVE THE TWR FREQ OR AT LEAST I DID NOT HEAR IT. THE STUDENT SWITCHED FREQ AND MADE HIS CALL FOR OUR CLRNC INSTRUCTIONS. WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT THE TWR; I OBSERVED THE FLOW OF TFC AND USED WHAT WE RECEIVED ON THE ATIS BROADCAST; AND MADE AN APCH TO THE GRASS ON THE N END OF THE ARPT; NEXT TO THE RAMP; STAYING CLR OF ALL FIXED WING TFC IN THE AIR AND ON THE GND. AT THIS POINT I CHKED THE RADIOS AND FOUND THE STUDENT DID NOT HAVE THE RIGHT FREQ DIALED IN ON THE RADIO. I THEN CORRECTED IT AND CALLED THE TWR TO CHK THE RADIO AND TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT HAD HAPPENED. IF I WOULD HAVE HEARD THE FREQ BROADCAST ON ATIS I WOULD HAVE CORRECTED THE PROB BEFORE IT HAPPENED. I LISTENED TO ATIS SEVERAL TIMES AFTER AND NEVER HEARD IT BROADCAST.
