THE PLT OF A TBM7 RPTS THAT HE EXPERIENCED AN NMAC WITH AN MD80 WHILE TURNING INBOUND TO FOLLOW ANOTHER ACFT TO LNDG. THE FLC OF THE MD80 CLBED WHILE THE RPTR IMMEDIATELY TURNED L TO AVOID THE MD80. THE FLC RPTED THE EMER CLB TO THE CTLR AND WERE TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO CONFLICT.

Narrative

I WAS BEING RADAR VECTORED AT THE TIME. MY HDG WAS 210 DEGS AS INSTRUCTED TO ME BY ATC; AND I WAS FLYING AN ALT OF 3500 FT. THE CTLR TOLD ME THAT I HAD TFC AT 10 O'CLOCK; AN ACR JET MAKING A R TURN TO FINAL FOR RWY 3. I SAID YES. HE INSTRUCTED ME TO MAKE A TURN TO THE R TO FOLLOW HIM. I TURNED R 45 DEGS TO FOLLOW THE ACR JET. THE CTLR TOLD ME TO MOVE TO THE R TO INTERCEPT THE FINAL BEHIND THE ACR. I DID SO. AS I TURNED TO MY R; TO MY SURPRISE; THERE WAS ANOTHER ACR JET DSNDING. HE STARTED TO PULL HIS ACFT UP AS I TURNED MY ACFT TO THE L. THE PLT OF THIS ACR JET INFORMED THE CTLR THAT HE HAD PULLED UP BECAUSE OF A TCASII ALERT OF TFC AT 4000 FT. THE CTLR INFORMED HIM THAT THE ONLY TFC HE HAD WAS A TBM AT 3500 FT AND THAT IT WAS NOT A CONFLICT. AFTER THIS ACR PASSED BY; THE CTLR TOLD ME TO TURN R AND FOLLOW THE OTHER ACR JET TO THE RWY 3. I DO NOT RECALL IF THE ACR JET WAS ON THE SAME FREQ AS ME BEFORE HE GOT THE TCASII ALERT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE ACR MD80 WAS DSNDING FROM BEHIND THE RPTR; AT HIS 5 O'CLOCK POS; WHILE THE RPTR WAS ON A DOWNWIND FOR RWY 3. WHEN THE RPTR TURNED 45 DEGS TO FOLLOW THE OTHER ACR ON A 2 MI FINAL; HE WAS ALSO TURNING BACK TOWARD THE MD80 THAT HAD BEEN OVERTAKING HIM. WHEN THE RPTR LOOKED UP; HE SAW THE SHIP NUMBER OF THE ACFT AND THE FACE OF THE ACR CAPT LOOKING AT HIM. THEY WERE AT NEARLY THE SAME ALT. THE ACR FLC CLBED AND THE RPTR BANKED SHARPLY TO THE L TO AVOID THE ACR. RPTR WAS REALLY SURPRISED AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY AT THE TIME. HE WAS ALSO SHOCKED WHEN HE HEARD THE CTLR RESPOND THAT THERE WAS NOT A CONFLICT AFTER THE FLC RPTED THAT THEY HAD MADE AN EMER CLB IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA. RPTR NOW BELIEVES THAT THE REASON THAT HE DID NOT HEAR THE ACR THAT HE CONFLICTED WITH WAS BECAUSE HE MAY HAVE BEEN IN CLOSE PROX TO AN APCH CTLR SECTOR BOUNDARY -- HE HAD JUST CHANGED FREQS SHORTLY BEFORE THE NMAC OCCURRED AND NOW BELIEVES THAT THE ACR MAY HAVE APCHED FROM THE SAME DIRECTION ON THE SAME PREVIOUS FREQ.
