INSTRUCTOR WITH STUDENT PREPARING FOR COMMERCIAL INST CHK RIDE MAKES GEAR UP LNDG IN AN AMPHIB ACFT.
Narrative
I WAS GIVING INSTRUCTION IN A SINGLE ENG SEAPLANE TO A COMMERCIAL/INST PLT. I WAS PREPARING THE PLT FOR HIS SEAPLANE CHKRIDE. AFTER SEVERAL WATER LNDGS; I SUGGESTED THAT THE PLT PRACTICE SOME 'LAND' LNDGS; SINCE THE ATTITUDE OF WATER LNDGS AND 'LAND' LNDGS DIFFER. WE PROCEEDED TO AN UNCTLED ARPT; WHERE THE PLT PERFORMED 'LAND' LNDGS. DURING THE CIRCUIT IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT; I WAS MAKING NOTES REGARDING THE PLT'S PERFORMANCE. DURING THIS TIME; MY ATTN WAS; INADVERTENTLY; NOT FOCUSED ON THE LNDG CHKLIST AND I DO NOT RECALL WHETHER ON THAT CIRCUIT THE PLT CONFIRMED THAT THE LNDG GEAR WAS LOWERED FOR LNDG. WHEN THE PLANE CONTACTED THE GND; I HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE AND I IMMEDIATELY SECURED THE ACFT AND ORDERED THE PLT TO EVAC. I THEN REALIZED THAT THE LNDG GEAR WAS STILL RETRACTED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. FOLLOWING THE INCIDENT; I CONTACTED A MECH. WE ELEVATED THE PLANE AND LOWERED THE LNDG GEAR. I INSPECTED THE PLANE AND DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS NO SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE; HOWEVER; THE FAA HAD ALREADY BEEN NOTIFIED BY LCL AUTHS. THE PLANE WAS FLOWN BACK TO SARASOTA AFTER I DETERMINED THAT THE PLANE WAS SAFE FOR FLT. A FEW DAYS LATER; THE PLANE WAS FLOWN TO ANOTHER ARPT FOR REPAIRS. IN AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION; I OBTAINED A FLT PERMIT FOR THE FLT TO THE REPAIR FACILITY.
