Narrative
IFR FLT TO BAXLEY; GA; 30J. VLD (VALDOSTA; GA) MY ALTERNATE; INFORMED ME VLD WX 200 FT CEILING AND 2 MI VISIBILITY AND AMG 500 FT CEILING AND 3 MI VISIBILITY. I CHOSE TO DO A VOR APCH INTO ALMA. UPON REACHING AMG VOR AS I TURNED OUTBOUND THE ATTITUDE INDICATOR TUMBLED AND BECAME UNUSABLE. I GOT THE ACFT STABILIZED AND #1 COM WOULD NOT XMIT. CONTACTED ZJX ON #2 RADIO AND ASKED FOR ILS INTO WAYCROSS; GA. SOME CONFUSION HERE AS I TRIED TO GET WAYCROSS APCH PLATE OUT. SO I TUNED WAYCROSS VOR IN AND HEADED TO WAYCROSS RADAR VECTORS WERE REFUSED (AT 4000 FT). AFTER GETTING THE APCH PLATE IN FRONT OF ME; I TUNED IN THE LOM AND HEADED THERE. ABOUT THE TIME I ARRIVED AT THE LOM; I DISCOVERED I HAD A PROB WITH #2 COM. MHZ GEAR WAS BROKEN; MAKING FREQ DISPLAY UNRELIABLE. AT THIS POINT I ASKED FOR BETTER WX. #2 RADIO WAS STILL ON ZJX. I WAS OFFERED JAX; FL; OR SSI; GA. I CHOSE JAX AND ASKED TO NOT CHANGE FREQ. ZJX VECTORED ME TO JAX ARPT. I WAS ABLE TO CHANGE FREQ ON #2 COM (BY COUNTING THE CLICKS) TO JAX APCH (HAND-HELD AS A BACKUP). NOTE: THIS RADIO WOULD TUNE; BUT GEAR HAD GAP MAKING IT SKIP FREQS. I WAS CLRED FOR ILS RWY 13; GIVEN A NO GYRO APCH AND LANDED WITH NO PROB. NOTE: AT NO TIME DID I DECLARE AN EMER; BUT THE EQUIP WAS OUT AT JAX AND SECURITY ASKED FOR IDENT.
