PVT PLT OF AN SMA SEL LOST CTL OF THE ACFT DURING LNDG IN GUSTY XWIND CONDITIONS RESULTING IN CRASH LNDG OFF THE RWY INTO A FIELD. NO INJURIES. ACFT DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO FUSELAGE SKIN AND WHEEL PANT DAMAGE.

Narrative

UPON RETURNING TO F46 I REQUESTED ADVISORY FROM F46 UNICOM AND RECEIVED (WINDS SW 10-16 KTS AND RWY 16 WAS THE PREFERRED RWY) DUE TO VARIABLE WIND CONDITIONS I ASKED THAT RWY 34 MIGHT NOT BE BETTER AND I RECEIVED NO RESPONSE; HE MAY HAVE BEEN WALKED ON BY OTHER RADIO TFC. UPON DOWNWIND ENTRY I OBSERVED WINDSOCK SW SO I PROCEEDED WITH LNDG ON RWY 16. JUST AT TOUCHDOWN WIND CHANGED TO NW AND GUSTING. AS A RESULT I OVERSHOT DESIRED LNDG AREA AND XWIND CAUSED SOME CTL PROBS. LNDG WAS HOT AND ACFT WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN; AND IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO GAR OR ATTEMPT ANOTHER TKOF. IN ORDER TO AVOID MAJOR DAMAGE I SKIDDED OFF R SIDE OF RWY; APPLIED ENOUGH PWR TO CLR A DITCH; FENCE AND CAME TO REST IN OPEN FIELD; HOWEVER; FENCE POSTS SCRAPED BOTTOM OF ACFT AND DAMAGED SEVERAL SKIN PANELS AND CRACKED THE WHEEL PANTS. THERE WAS NO PROP STRIKE; NO ENG DAMAGE AND NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. ON APR/TUE/96; I CONTACTED FSDO DALLAS AND THEY REFERRED ME TO NTSB. ON APR/WED/96; I CONTACTED FT WORTH NTSB AND THEY STATED THAT AN ACCIDENT DID NOT OCCUR AND THAT I DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING ELSE EXCEPT TO REPAIR.
