WHEN THE GEAR WAS RAISED AFTER TKOF THE NOSE GEAR DOORS DID NOT CLOSE AS DESIGNED. THE GEAR WAS LOWERED ON THE RETURN TO LAND AND AN EMER WAS DECLARED. AFTER SLOWING BELOW 150 KTS THE DOORS AND LNDG GEAR WERE NORMAL. A FLY- BY WAS MADE TO ASSURE ALL EXTERNAL INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL.

Narrative
CLBING OUT OF ATL ENRTE TO JACKSON; MS; AFTER RAISING THE LNDG GEAR WE NOTICED THAT THE NOSE GEAR GREEN LIGHT REMAINED ON. WE THEN CYCLED THE LNDG GEAR DOWN GOT ALL 3 GREEN GEAR LIGHTS BUT THE AMBER GEAR DOOR OPEN LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE EXTINGUISHED. AT THAT POINT I HAD MY FO READ THE APPROPRIATE ABNORMAL PROC FOR LNDG GEAR DOWN AND GEAR DOOR OPEN LIGHT REMAINS ON. THIS PROC REQUIRES A VISUAL CHK OF THE GEAR DOORS BY USE OF THE VIEWER PERISCOPE TO VERIFY DOOR POS. AFTER COMPLETING THIS INSPECTION MY FO ADVISED ME THAT THE L SIDE DID NOT APPEAR TO BE NORMAL. I WAS COORDINATING THE FLT WITH ATC; AND WE WERE ALSO IN CONTACT WITH FLT OPS AS WELL AS MAINT CTL. I REQUESTED A FLY-BY SO THAT MAINT COULD VISUALLY CHK TO SEE IF OUR GEAR DOORS WERE CLOSED. IN THE MEANTIME I WAS KEEPING THE PAX INFORMED OF OUR SIT AND COORDINATING WITH THE FLT ATTENDANTS TO KEEP EVERYONE AS RELAXED AND CALM AS POSSIBLE. WHILE DSNDING ON FINAL APCH FOR OUR FLY-BY WE NOTICED THAT THE AMBER GEAR DOOR OPEN LIGHT EXTINGUISHED AT APPROX 150 KIAS. AT THAT POINT ALL LNDG GEAR INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL. AFTER THE FLY-BY; OUR PEOPLE ON THE GND SAID THAT OUR GEAR DOORS APPEARED TO BE NORMAL AND OUR LNDG GEAR APPEARED NORMAL ALSO. REFERRING BACK TO THE ABNORMAL PROC IT SAYS THAT IF THE DOORS ARE VERIFIED CLOSED; TO PROCEED AND LAND NORMALLY. AS A PRECAUTION I DECLARED AN EMER AND REQUESTED THE EMER EQUIP TO BE STANDING BY. I ALSO BRIEFED THE FLT ATTENDANTS TO PREPARE FOR AN EMER LNDG. WE LANDED ON RWY 26R IN ATLANTA WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
