CORP PLT FLYING A LEAR 31 MISSETS GPS FIX AND ALMOST MISSES XING RESTR. CTR CTLR CATCHES THE ERROR AND REQUESTS A 360 DEG TURN TO DSND TO THE ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative

WE WERE TOLD TO CROSS 25 MI SW OF MHT AT 9000 FT MSL. WE WERE NAVING BY GPS AND BACKUP VOR. THE GPS STILL SAID WE WERE 85-90 MI FROM MHT. CTR ADVISED US THAT WE WERE 25 MI OUT AND WE WOULD HAVE TO DO A 360 DEG TURN TO MAKE THE XING BECAUSE WE WERE STILL AT 30000 FT. WE MADE THE TURN AND MADE THE XING RESTR. WE STILL DO NOT KNOW WHY THE GPS GAVE US THAT WE WERE 85 MI OUT. WE WERE NAVING TO KEENE VOR THEN MHT. THE 3 LETTER IDENT FOR KEENE IS EEN. THERE IS ANOTHER VOR IN THE AREA THAT HAS AN IDENT ENE WHICH IS ON THE NE SIDE OF MHT. IT IS POSSIBLE I COULD HAVE PUT ENE IN THE GPS INSTEAD OF EEN. I DON'T THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE TWO VORS THAT CLOSE WITH SUCH CLOSE IDENTS SINCE SO MUCH OF THE NEW EQUIP WE HAVE YOU HAVE TO PUT IN THE 3 LETTER IDENT. IT LOOKED LIKE WE WERE ON COURSE BECAUSE WE WERE GOING EXACTLY RIGHT FOR THE COURSE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR ACFT WAS A LEAR 31 AND HE STATED THAT IF THE CTLR HAD NOT CAUGHT THE ERROR THEY WOULD HAVE REMAINED AT ALT AND MISSED THE XING RESTR. THEY WERE ABOUT 5 MI FROM THE XING FIX WHEN ATC CONTACTED THEM. THEY DID DETERMINE THAT THE WRONG VOR HAD BEEN ENTERED INTO THE GPS. THIS WAS NEW EQUIP AND DIFFERENT FROM THEIR PREVIOUS EQUIP. IT WAS A LEARNING PROCESS ON THIS TRIP. THEY LEARNED!!
