Synopsis

AN ACR B737-200 HAD A TRACK DEV WHEN THEY FAILED TO INTERCEPT AN INTERCEPTING RADIAL PROPERLY.

Narrative

CAPT WAS FLYING THE ACFT OUTBOUND ON THE HMV 311 DEG RADIAL ON THE SWEED 2 ARR TO CINCINNATI. WE WERE BEING CTLED BY ZID. THERE WAS A 60 DEG INTERCEPT FROM THE HMV 311 DEG TO THE VXV 011 DEG OUTBOUND RADIAL AT 86 DME. AT THE TIME OF THE INTERCEPT; I USED A 40 LEAD POINT WITH A SHALLOW ANGLE OF BANK; 10-15 DEGS; IN A DSNDING TURN FROM FL280 TO FL240. AFTER ROLLING OUT OF THE TURN; I OVERSHOT THE RADIAL ABOUT 4 DEGS. AT THE TIME OF THE INTERCEPT THE VXV 011 DEG RADIAL WAS FLUCTUATING PLUS OR MINUS 3 OR 4 DEGS. THIS FLUCTUATION PLUS THE SHALLOW ANGLE OF BANK WERE THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THE OVERSHOOT. ATC NOTED THE OVERSHOOT AND GAVE ME A HDG. PRIOR TO THEIR COMMENT; I HAND CORRECTED TO A 035 DEG HDG TO REJOIN THE VXV 011 DEG. THIS 60 DEG INTERCEPT AT 86 MI FROM A VOR FACILITY IS UNUSUAL. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL USE EXTRA VIGILANCE ON THIS ARR. ATC RPTED THAT THERE WERE NO TFC CONFLICTS CAUSED FROM THIS OVERSHOOT. ATC RPTED THAT THE ACTUAL OVERSHOOT WAS IN THE RANGE OF 8 MI. BASED ON OUR INDICATIONS; I HAD CALCULATED ABOUT A 4 MI OVERSHOOT. I TALKED TO THE CTR CTLRS ON THE GND AFTER THE FLT LANDED IN CINCINNATI AND THEY SAID THERE WERE NO FLT DEVS OR VIOLATIONS FILED OR ANTICIPATED.
