THE C172 BELONGS TO PVT FLYING CLUB AT GAITHERSBURG; MD; WHOSE MEMBERS RENT IT FOR NOMINAL FEE. I AM MEMBER; PROVIDING WEEKEND CFII INSTRUCTION TO OTHER MEMBERS. AT XA00 I WAS IN GAI RESTAURANT WITH FRIENDS; AWAITING RETURN OF THE ACFT AFTER A TRIP TO FDK BY ANOTHER MEMBER. THIS MEMBER AND HIS WIFE HAD RECENTLY BEEN GIVEN THEIR BFR BY ANOTHER CLUB CFII. I HAD NEVER FLOWN WITH THIS MEMBER OR WIFE. AT XA10 I RECEIVED A TELECON FROM WIFE: 'WE'LL BE LATE BACK. ACFT DEVELOPED A NOSEWHEEL SHIMMY ON TKOF ROLL; WE ABORTED.' I ADVISED WIFE: 'SUBJECT ACFT HAS HISTORY OF NOSEWHEEL SHIMMY. ON TKOF ROLL; APPLY BACK PRESSURE ON STICK TO TAKE WT OFF NOSEWHEEL; ALSO ON LNDG.' WIFE REPEATED THIS ADVICE TO HUSBAND (PLT) AND THEN RANG OFF. SHE DID NOT ASK WHETHER TO ATTEMPT ANOTHER TKOF; AND I DID NOT RECOMMEND THAT SHE/HUSBAND SHOULD ATTEMPT TKOF. AT XA30 I RECEIVED SECOND TELECON FROM WIFE: 'WE JUST CRASHED ON FDK RWY 23. NOSEWHEEL COLLAPSE ON TKOF ROLL.' I COMMISERATED AND STARTED PHONING CLUB MEMBERS TO ASSIST. SUBSEQUENTLY HUSBAND PLT STATED THAT HE HELD BACK PRESSURE; ROTATED AT 40 MPH; AND CONTINUED HOLDING BACK PRESSURE AWAITING ASI TO INDICATE PROPER CLB-SPD (65 MPH). TEMP 95 DEGS; ACFT NEAR GROSS; I SUSPECT ACFT FLEW OUT OF GND EFFECT (BELOW STALL SPD: 55 MPH) AND STALLED. PLT STATES ACFT WAS AIRBORNE 'TO ABOUT 40 FT' BEFORE HITTING HARD ON NOSEWHEEL. I ALSO SUSPECT PLT SUFFERED A BOUT OF 'INSTRUCTOR-ITIS;' HE ALLOWED MY ADVICE TO OVERRIDE HIS OWN JUDGEMENT AND HIS KNOWLEDGE OF TKOF TECHNIQUE IN PREVAILING WX. IN FUTURE WHEN ASKED FOR ADVICE; I SHALL ASSUME REQUESTER TO BE PRIMARY STUDENT REGARDLESS OF ACTUAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/CURRENCY; AND ADVISE ACCORDINGLY.
