SMA ACFT DAMAGED DURING LNDG PROC XWIND LNDG ON A MOUNTAIN STRIP IN ALASKA. RWY EXCURSION. RPTR FAILED TO PERFORM A POST FLT INSPECTION AT STRIP AND FLEW DAMAGED ACFT BACK TO FAI.

Narrative

ON SHORT FINAL TO AN OFF ARPT STRIP A STREAMER FLAG INDICATED A STRONG XWIND COMPONENT. I ADJUSTED TO THE XWIND WITH A WING LOW SLIP TECHNIQUE. THIS HELD CTRLINE TO TOUCHDOWN. ON TOUCHDOWN THE L MAIN GEAR BOUNCED THE L WING HIGH; THE XWIND PUSHED THE WING HIGHER AND THE ACFT TAIL BEGAN TO WEATHERVANE. THE R MAIN GEAR CONTACTED THE GND AS THE ACFT LEFT THE RWY AND BECAME AIRBORNE AGAIN. TOUCHING DOWN OFF THE RWY THE MAIN GEAR BOUNCED OFF THE FAR SIDE OF A 2-3 FT DIP AS THE ACFT CAME BACK ONTO THE RWY; FINALLY SKIDDING TO A REST AT ABOUT 45 DEGS TO THE RWY. ON RETURNING TO FAI A NUMBER OF HOLES WERE FOUND IN THE R HORIZ STABILIZER; ELEVATOR AND R SIDE OF THE RUDDER. ALSO THE R WINGTIP BOW RUNNING LIGHT AND FABRIC WERE DAMAGED AND THE AILERON FABRIC WAS TORN. HAVING HAD VERY LITTLE TIME IN THE ACFT THIS YR AND FEW IF ANY XWIND LNDGS; THIS LNDG ATTEMPT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN MADE. NOT TO MENTION ON A NO GAR MOUNTAIN SIDE STRIP WITH AN ESTIMATED 15-20 KT 90 DEG XWIND. AS REPAIRS WILL KEEP THE AIRPLANE DOWN THROUGH THE WINTER AND NEXT SPRING I WILL BE DUE FOR A BIENNIAL FLT REVIEW. I INTEND TO GET 3-5 HRS OF DUAL XWIND PRACTICE AND STAY CLR OF MOUNTAINSIDE STRIPS.
