ON A VFR FLT PLAN; STOPPED N96 FOR FUEL. FILED IFR BUT FAILED TO ADVISE FSS TO CANCEL VFR. RUSHING DEP ACCOUNT 3 MIN WINDOW; FAILED TO RESET DIRECTIONAL GYRO AND TURN ON XPONDER. ZNY CAUGHT ERROR AND FLT CONTINUED NORMALLY.

Narrative

I HAD STOPPED AT N96 FOR FUEL ENRTE FROM KNXX TO 1G1. I HAD BEEN ON A VFR FLT PLAN AND THEN FILED IFR FROM N96 TO 1G1. I PERFORMED PART OF MY PRETKOF CHKLIST AND THEN CALLED FOR MY CLRNC. AFTER RECEIVING MY CLRNC FROM ZNY THEY TOLD ME TO DEPART AND RPT AIRBORNE IN NO MORE THAN 3 MINS. I ROLLED OUT ON THE RWY AND TOOK OFF FORGETTING TO SET MY DIRECTIONAL GYRO OR TURN MY XPONDER TO ON FROM STANDBY. AFTER CLBING OUT; I TURNED ON COURSE AND CALLED CTR. THEY ASKED ME TO CHK MY XPONDER AND I TURNED IT ON. THEY GAVE ME A HDG OF 320 DEGS TO INTERCEPT V6 WHICH I TURNED TO. THEY THEN SWITCHED ME TO ZOB WHICH I TRIED FOR A MIN OR TWO WITH NO CONTACT. I RETURNED TO ZNY AND THEY ASKED WHAT MY HDG WAS AND I SAID 320 DEGS. THEY SAID IT LOOKED MORE LIKE 240 DEGS. I THEN CHKED THE MAGNETIC COMPASS; RESET THE DIRECTIONAL GYRO AND GOT ON COURSE. THE REST OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL EXCEPT WHEN I GOT HOME; THE CLEVELAND FSS HAD CALLED ABOUT MY VFR FLT PLAN FROM KNXX TO 1G1. APPARENTLY; WHEN I FILED IFR FROM N96 TO 1G1; THE VFR PLAN REMAINED IN THE SYS. IN A HURRY; I MISSED SEVERAL ROUTINE THINGS ON THIS FLT!
