Synopsis

A DC10-30 WAS UNABLE TO RETRACT THE NOSE LNDG GEAR FIRST FLT AFTER HAVING NOSE GEAR STRUT SEALS REPLACED.

Narrative

I AM EMPLOYED AS AN A&P MECH FOR ZZZ AIRLINES. ON SEP/XX/96; I WAS ASSIGNED TO WORK ON ABC AIRLINES DC10-30. THE WORK WAS TO REPLACE NOSE STRUT SEALS DUE TO LEAKING. ALL WORK WAS ACCOMPLISHED PER ZZZ MAINT MANUAL. 5 DAYS AFTER THE WORK; THE ACFT FLEW. AFTER TKOF THE GEAR HANDLE WAS POSITIONED TO UP. THE NOSE FAILED TO RETRACT UP. I WAS TOLD THE ACFT RETURNED TO EARTH. UPON CHKING IT WAS FOUND A PART OF THE NOSE GEAR GND SENSING MECHANISM HAD BROKEN; PREVENTING THE NOSE GEAR FROM RETRACTING. I'M NOT SURE WHAT CAUSED THIS BREAKAGE. AFTER ACFT PART WAS REPLACED THE NOSE GEAR OPENED NORMAL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR WAS CONTACTED AND REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. THE AIRPLANE WAS NOT FLOWN FOR 5 DAYS AFTER THE STRUT SEALS WERE REPLACED. THE RPTR STATES NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANY WORK PERFORMED IN THE NOSE AREA AFTER THE SEAL REPLACEMENT WAS ACCOMPLISHED. THE RPTR DOES NOT HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THE PARTS OR PART REQUIRED TO CORRECT THE GND SENSING MALFUNCTION PREVENTING NOSE GEAR RETRACTION. THE RPTR STATES THE FAA HAS MADE NO CONTACT.
