2 RWYS BLOCKED AT DCA WHEN B737-400 SUFFERS A FAILURE OF ITS NOSEWHEEL TORQUE LINK ON THE LNDG PROC ROLLOUT.
Narrative
A NORMAL VMC LNDG TO RWY 36 AT DCA. PF WAS FO. CONFIGN: FLAPS 40 DEGS; AUTOBRAKE SET AT '2' SETTING. APPROX 4-5 SECONDS AFTER NOSEWHEEL TOUCHDOWN; A WHEEL SHIMMY/SHAKING BEGAN THAT RAPIDLY BECAME MORE AND MORE SEVERE AS ACFT SLOWED. SPD JUST UNDER 100 KTS WHEN IT BEGAN. CAPT ASSUMED CTL FROM FO WHEN SPD LESS THAN 60 KTS. AT VERY END OF LNDG ROLL; CAPT'S TILLER COULD NOT STEER ACFT; AND IT CAME TO A STOP AT INTXN OF RWY 36 AND RWY 33. ACFT NOT QUITE CLR OF RWY 36. RWY WAS CLOSED FOR 15-20 MINS UNTIL WE WERE TOWED OFF. TOUCHDOWN WAS NORMAL; NOT HARD. BRAKING WAS NORMAL. ACFT WAS TOWED TO PARKING; PAX DEPLANED; NO INJURIES. NO OTHER ABNORMALITIES WERE NOTED AND NO EMER WAS DECLARED. NOSEWHEEL TORQUE LINK HAD FAILED/SHEARED FROM BOTTOM OF NOSE STRUT. L FRONT TIRE BLOWN OUT; R NOSE GEAR CUT; BUT REMAINED INFLATED. FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE FROM TORQUE LINK BROKE TCASII ANTENNA; AND ALSO DAMAGED R SIDE ENG; BREAKING FAN BLADES AND PUTTING NUMEROUS HOLES IN INSIDE OF ENG COWLING. NO DAMAGE TO CORE SECTION WAS NOTED.
