Synopsis

NMAC BTWN AN OLD MIL ACFT AND A SAILPLANE. NON TWR ARPT SPONSORING A SPECIAL INTEREST ACTIVITY AIR SHOW. SAILPLANE ACTIVITY ACTIVE ON MULTIPLE RWY OPS XING RWYS.

Narrative

THE ARPT WAS HAVING A FLY-IN. BOTH ACFT AND SAILPLANES WERE OPERATING AT ARPT. THE ACFT WERE USING RWY 18 (A HARD SURFACE) AND THE SAILPLANES WERE USING RWY 9 (A GRASS STRIP). THE WIND WAS 7 KTS AT 150 DEGS. I WAS FLYING A MIL ACFT AND WAS ASKED TO DO A LOW APCH AS I COULD NOT LAND AT THIS ARPT. I CIRCLED THE ARPT AT 3000 FT AGL UNTIL ALL TFC WAS CLR. I THEN ENTERED A LONG FINAL APCH. I ANNOUNCED MY POS SEVERAL TIMES. THERE WAS ALSO A FORD TRI MOTOR ON APCH. WE WERE IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER. I OVERTOOK HIM AT APPROX A 2.5 MI FINAL. I PASSED HIM ON HIS R SIDE WITH ABOUT 750 FT SEPARATION. I FLEW MY APCH DOWN THE R SIDE OF THE RWY (RWY 18) SO THAT MY WAKE WOULD NOT INTERFERE WITH HIS COURSE. I WAS APPROX 100 FT W OF THE RWY. THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC ANNOUNCED ON UNICOM. HALF WAY DOWN THE RWY; I SAW A SAILPLANE AT MY ALT AND FLYING DIRECTLY UP THE RWY IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I WENT UNDERNEATH HIM AND TURNED L AS HE TURNED TO HIS L. I THEN CALLED HIM ON UNICOM AND HE ANSWERED (TO MY SURPRISE!). HE HAD NOT HEARD ME NOR HAD HE ANNOUNCED HIS POS. HE LATER LANDED ON RWY 9 AND I LEFT THE AREA.
