JETSTAR WAS FLOWN BEFORE A REQUIRED MAINT INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED BY THE FAA.

Narrative

WE HAD A GPS INSTALLED AT FORT LAUDERDALE ARPT FLORIDA. WORK STARTED ON THE ACFT ON OCT/XA/96. AFTER THE WORK WAS COMPLETED I PICKED UP AN FAA FORM 337 ON OCT/XF/96 WHICH WAS SIGNED. I THEN DEPARTED ON OUR FLT. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT EVERYTHING WAS FINISHED INCLUDING THE PAPERWORK. TODAY; OCT/XI/96; I WAS CONTACTED AND TOLD THAT THE FORT LAUDERDALE FAA HAD WANTED TO INSPECT THE STAND ALONE; NON COUPLED INSTALLATION; AND THAT THEY HAD NOT APPROVED THE ACFT FOR RETURN TO FLT. SINCE LEARNING OF THIS I HAD HAD THE GPS REMOVED BY AN A&P MECH AND AN ENTRY PLACED IN THE LOGBOOK. WE ARE FLYING THE ACFT BACK TO FORT LAUDERDALE IN ORDER FOR THE ACFT TO BE INSPECTED AND THE PAPERWORK PROPERLY COMPLETED ON NOV/XM/96. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 351711: SIGNED A 337 FORM BLOCK 6; STATING THAT I WAS GOING TO INSTALL A GPS IN THE ACFT. THE WORK ENTAILED REMOVING A LORAN AND PUTTING THE GPS IN THE SAME LOCATION. REMOVING THE ANTENNA AND INSTALLING THE GPS ANTENNA IN THE SAME LOCATION. THE 337 WAS THEN TAKEN TO THE FAA FOR APPROVAL. THEY STATED THAT THEY WANTED TO INSPECT THE ACFT.
