THE PLT RECOGNIZED HIS MISTAKE WHEN HE APCHED THE N HOLD LINE FOR RWY 8 -- HE WAS SUPPOSED TO HOLD SHORT AT THE S HOLD LINE. THE ATCT GND CTLR ALERTED THE PLT TO MOVE BACK TO THE S HOLD LINE; BUT THE RPTR INSTEAD MOVED TO THE N HOLD LINE; IN ORDER TO CLR THE AREA AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Narrative

AT LBB DURING TAXI; I MISSED THE S HOLD LINE FOR RWY 8 ON TXWY A. I DIDN'T ENTER EITHER RWY 8 OR RWYS 17R AND 35L; BUT WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE DIRECT PATH OF TFC LNDG ON RWY 8. FORTUNATELY; THERE WAS NO LNDG TFC AT THAT TIME. I NOTICED A N HOLD LINE ON TXWY A AS I PULLED UP W OF RWY 8. I COULDN'T FIND AN E HOLD LINE WHICH ALERTED ME TO THE POSSIBILITY THAT I MUST HAVE MISSED A S HOLD LINE FOR THIS RWY. THE TWR GND CTLR CAUGHT MY MISTAKE ABOUT THIS SAME TIME. I MOVED TO THE N HOLD LINE AS THE CTLR WAS TELLING ME TO MOVE TO THE S HOLD LINE. HE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH MY MOVE TO THE N HOLD LINE BUT ACCEPTED IT. MY ONLY THOUGHT WAS TO GET OUT OF THERE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE TO A SAFE POS WHICH I KNEW WOULD BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE N HOLD LINE. I CALLED THE TWR AND DISCUSSED WHAT HAPPENED WITH ONE OF THE CTLRS. I DIDN'T GET HIS NAME; HOWEVER; HE DID TELL ME 'THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.' IN MY OPINION WE NEED BETTER DISPLACED THRESHOLD HOLD LINE IDENT. I SUGGEST A SOLID RED LINE ACROSS THE TXWY 3 OR 4 FT WIDE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: CONTRIBUTING TO THIS RPTR'S FAILURE TO SEE THE HOLD LINE WAS HIS ANTICIPATION OF SIGHTING THE LINE OFF TO THE R; AND RUNNING N AND S. ON A RETURN TRIP; THE RPTR COULD NOT FIND ANY SIGNS IDENTING THIS AREA. RPTR'S ACFT IS A PASE.
