Narrative

AROUND XA10Z ON DEC/XX/96; I WAS CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH RWY 15 AT CHS. WHILE ON SHORT FINAL I ENCOUNTERED WAKE TURB AND MY AIRSPD DROPPED BELOW 'BLUE LINE' AND I REMEMBER BEING DISTR BY MY AIRSPD AND ALSO WANTING TO CLR THE ARRESTOR CABLE ACROSS RWY 15 AT CHS TO AVOID THE NOISE WHILE XING THE CABLE AND CAUSING ANY ALARM TO THE PAX. IN SO DOING; I DID NOT HEAR THE APCH CTLR INSTRUCT ME TO CONTACT THE TWR FOR PERMISSI ON TO LAND ON RWY 15. I DO NOT THINK THE CTLR REMEMBERED TO DO THIS; BUT ALSO I DO UNDERSTAND IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO NOT LAND UNTIL I HAVE A LNDG CLRNC. NEVERTHELESS; I LANDED AND SPOILED MY EVENING. TO THINK I COULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING SO STUPID! I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT IT DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. CORRECTIVE ACTION: STAY ALERT; BEWARE OF DISTRS; ALSO APPLIES TO CTLR 'IF' HE DID NOT INSTRUCT ME TO CONTACT THE TWR FOR LNDG CLRNC. IF SO; HE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE ALERTED ME AND THE SIT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. ALSO; A PVT PLT WAS RIDING IN THE COPLT SEAT; AND HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THE CTLR DID NOT HAND ME OFF TO THE TWR FOR LNDG. WHY HE ALSO DID NOT TELL ME I DID NOT HAVE A LNDG CLRNC 'I CAN'T UNDERSTAND.' HE DID NOT SAY ANYTHING; SO HE DID NOT DISTRACT ME. I CAN'T BELIEVE I LANDED. I WISH I KNEW THE ANSWER. I MUST STAY MORE ALERT.
