A MLG TRANSPORT EXPERIENCED LOUD NOISE ON LNDG GEAR RETRACTION DURING INITIAL CLB. NOISE INTERFERED WITH CTLR ALT ASSIGNMENT.

Narrative

WHEN RAISING THE GEAR; WE GOT A TREMENDOUS NOISE FROM THE NOSE AREA. ALL INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL -- GEAR UP AND LOCKED. TWR HAD GIVEN US A TURN TO 350 DEGS AFTER TKOF ON RWY 4; MAINTAIN 4000 FT. LOWERED GEAR AND NOISE STOPPED. BEGAN TO GET ICE. THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN ICE ON/IN GEAR (NOSE) DOORS; SO WE RAISED GEAR AGAIN AND GOT THE NOISE AGAIN. NOISE WAS SO LOUD WE HAD TO YELL. FO TOLD DEP WE HAD TO COME BACK. I HEARD 2000 FT. LATER; WE WERE TOLD 3000 FT. ICING BEGAN TO GET WORSE SO WE REQUESTED 2000 FT. LANDED NORMALLY AND FOUND THE R NOSE GEAR DOOR CABLE BROKEN SO IT WAS HANGING IN THE WIND. ON LNDG; TWR ASKED FOR A CALL. SAID DEP HAD INITIALLY CLRED US TO 3000 FT. I HEARD 2000 FT AND SAW 2000 FT IN THE ALT INDICATOR WINDOW. WE WERE INCREDIBLY BUSY WITH LOTS OF ICE; NOISE; CHKLISTS; ETC; SO I MAY HAVE MISHEARD. AS SOON AS I HEARD HIM SAY 3000 FT; WE CLBED TO 3000 FT; BUT ICE GOT WORSE SO WE RECEIVED A CLRNC BACK TO 2000 FT. MAY HAVE MISSED THE 3000 FT CALL IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE. WISH THE CTLR HAD DIRECTED US MORE FORCEFULLY IF WE WERE AT 2000 FT AND WERE SUPPOSED TO BE AT 3000 FT.
