UPON DEPARTING BEVERLY ARPT TO THE N; I RECEIVED FREQ CHANGE APPROVAL FROM BVY TWR TO CONTACT BOS APCH. MY INITIAL CONTACT WITH BOS HAD ME POSITIONED 1 SM SE OF BVY. BOS ANSWERED BACK WITH 'ACFT CALLING BOS SAY AGAIN.' I CONTACTED BOS AGAIN AND THEY GAVE ME A SQUAWK CODE. AS I PROCEEDED S; BOS HAD NOT CLRED ME; AS REQUESTED; THROUGH CLASS B. I WAS OVER SALEM; MA; (4 SM) SE OF BVY AND ABOUT 12 SM NE OF BOS WHEN I CALLED BOS TO CHK THE STATUS OF MY CLRNC. AT THAT TIME THE CTLR INDICATED THAT I WAS NOT IN RADAR CONTACT AND I SHOULD NOT ENTER CLASS B. HE SUGGESTED THAT I DSND IMMEDIATELY TO BELOW 2000 FT MSL TO 'GET CLR OF CLASS B.' HE THEN INDICATED THAT HE WAS ON A BACK UP SYS AND HE COULD NOT CLR ME THOUGH CLASS B AND THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE ENTERED CLASS B WITHOUT CLRNC. I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO BELOW 2000 FT MSL AND TURNED TO A SOUTHEASTERLY HEADING. ONCE AGAIN; THE CTLR ADMONISHED ME FOR ENTERING CLASS B. I INDICATED THAT I WAS NOT IN CLASS B AND THAT WAS WHY I HAD QUERIED MY CLRNC BEFORE ENTERING CLASS B. AS I DSNDED AND CHANGED HEADINGS AS INSTRUCTED; THE CTLR SAID 'IS THAT YOU OVER SALEM AT 3000 FT MSL?' I INDICATED YES (I WAS REALLY AT 2900 FT MSL). THE CTLR GAVE ME VECTORS AND HDOFS TO STAY CLR OF CLASS B WHICH I COMPLIED WITH. I AM SURE THAT USING THE BACK UP SYS; NOT HAVING ME ON RADAR; ME BEING CLOSE; BUT NOT IN CLASS B; ALL CONTRIBUTED TO THIS CONFUSION. FOR MY PART; I WILL BE SURE I GIVE A WIDER GAP BTWN MYSELF AND CLASS B.
