Synopsis

AN SMA STUDENT PLT HAD AN NMAC IN THE RWY 15R TFC PATTERN WITH A BIPLANE.

Narrative

I WAS PARKED; WATCHING TFC AND LISTENING TO TWR FREQ. ONE PLANE DEPARTED ARPT AND WAS NOT ADVISED OF TFC IN THE PATTERN. I RADIOED TWR OF MY INTENTION TO 'DEPART KARDY'S AND REMAIN IN THE PATTERN.' I ALSO NOTIFIED TWR OF 'BIPLANE TFC IN KARDY'S PATTERN.' I DEPARTED AND ENTERED NORMAL TFC PATTERN. WHILE ON DOWNWIND LEG; THE BIPLANE WAS SPOTTED TAKING OFF AT KARDY'S. UPON ENTERING BASE LEG; I VISUALLY; REACQUIRED TFC AT NORMAL PATTERN ALT; ON DOWNWIND; BTWN MIDFIELD AND APCH END OF RWY. ACFT WAS IN AREA TO BE EXPECTED AND APPEARED TO BE ON NORMAL PATTERN WELL BEHIND ME. I TURNED FINAL AND SET UP NORMAL APCH. HALFWAY DOWN FINAL LEG; AT APPROX 300 FT AGL; I SPOTTED MOVEMENT TO THE L IN THE CORNER OF MY EYE. MOVEMENT WAS THE BIPLANE LESS THAN 100 FT AWAY; APPROX 10 O'CLOCK POS; MOVING TO MY 12 O'CLOCK POS. ACFT WAS AT MY ALT. I BROKE OFF APCH; APPLIED FULL PWR AND TURNED TO MY L TO KEEP CLR OF OTHER ACFT. BOTH BIPLANE PLTS COULD CLRLY BE SEEN AND WERE NOT LOOKING IN MY DIRECTION. I DID A GAR; STAYING TO THE L OF RWY CTRLINE AND KEPT THE OTHER ACFT IN SIGHT THROUGH HIS LNDG. I WENT AROUND THE PATTERN AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. I CALLED THE TWR AND LET THEM KNOW I WAS ON THE GND. AFTER PARKING; I WAITED FOR THE BIPLANE TO LAND; THEN WENT TO TALK TO HIM ABOUT THE OCCURRENCE. THE BIPLANE PLT CLAIMED HE THOUGHT 'I WAS LEAVING THE PATTERN DUE TO MY DOWNWIND EXTENDING PAST APCH END OF THE RWY;' AND STATED HE NEVER SAW ME UNTIL I FLEW PAST HIM WHILE HE WAS LNDG. BIPLANE PLT ALSO STATED HE HAD 'NO IDEA OF NORMAL RECTANGULAR PATTERN AND DOES MIL APCHS; HAD NO RADIO AND DID NOT REALIZE ARPT WAS IN CLASS D AIRSPACE.' THE BIPLANE PLT THEN PROCEEDED TO MAKE SEVERAL MORE STOP AND GO APCHS. BIPLANE PLT SEEMED TO SHOW ONLY THE SLIGHTEST CONCERN OVER THE SEVERITY OF THE OCCURRENCE. BIPLANE PLT SEEMED TO SHOW LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF PROPER COMS; AIRSPACE SYS; TFC PATTERN AND RWY USE.
