HEADING TRACK DEV. PIC WAS NOT AWARE OF WHAT FO WAS GOING TO DO WITH RESPECT TO DEP CLRNC PROC.
Narrative
WE WERE AT DECATUR; IL; PREPARING TO DEPART FOR MDW ABOUT AB30 AM. THE CTL TWR WAS CLOSED AND I WAS FLYING WITH A GUY WHO WAS NEW TO THE ACFT AND WAS GOING TO FLY THE EMPTY LEG FROM THE R SEAT. WE BOARDED THE ACFT TOGETHER. I CLOSED THE DOOR; STARTED THE ENGS AND AS WE TAXIED OUT I ASKED MY PARTNER TO CALL STL RADIO AND PICK UP OUR IFR CLRNC. HE INFORMED ME THAT HE HAD ALREADY RECEIVED THE CLRNC AT AN EARLIER TIME. THIS WAS UNUSUAL AS THEY NORMALLY WON'T GIVE IT UNTIL YOU'RE READY TO START ENGS OR ARE TAXIING. AS WE TAXIED OUT; MY MIND WAS ON THE NON STANDARD BRIEFING FOR THE ACFT BEING PILOTED FROM THE R SEAT. AS WE WERE NEARING THE RWY AN ACFT CALLED ON CTAF AND SAID AS SOON AS THE FALCON TAKES OFF WE CAN COME ON IN AND LAND. I FELT WE SHOULD GET INTO THE AIR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THE INBOUND FLT COULD LAND. WE TOOK OFF ON RWY 24 AND MY PARTNER MADE A R TURN TO THE N TOWARDS OUR FIRST FIX. ZAU SOUNDED SURPRISED THAT WE HAD MADE A R TURN. IT THEN OCCURRED TO ME THAT I HAD NOT BEEN BRIEFED ON THE CLRNC. ALSO WE SHOULD HAVE TURNED L OUT OF THE TFC PATTERN. IT IS IMPORTANT TO DISCUSS THE CLRNC AND THE BEST WAY TO EXIT THE PATTERN BEFORE TKOF. ALSO MY PARTNER SHOULD NOT HAVE PICKED UP THE IFR CLRNC SO SOON. THE OTHER PLANE COULD HAVE COME ON IN.
