Narrative
DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS ON FEB/SUN/97: SFQ ARPT. I OWN A DEHAVILLAND VAMPIRE CLASSIC JET FOR AIRSHOW STATIC DISPLAY PURPOSES. THE WX CONDITIONS WERE ESSENTIALLY CAVU. I AM EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE REGARDING WX; MAINT; SURFACE CONDITIONS AND PLT PROFICIENCY. I ALWAYS HAVE 2- WAY UNICOM COM WHEN FLYING AT THIS UNCTLED FIELD AND I INFORM THE ARPT MGR OR REPRESENTATIVE OF A PLANNED FLT -- HE WILL THEN CLOSELY MONITOR. MOST OF THE ACFT FLYING AT THIS ARPT ARE OF THE SINGLE ENG SMALL SLOWER GENERAL TYPES. THIS VINTAGE JET HAS A RELATIVELY HIGH APCH SPD COMPARED TO THE SMALLER PISTONS AND THUS A WIDER LONGER PATTERN. I HAVE FLOWN NUMEROUS TIMES AT THIS ARPT OVER THE PAST SEASON WITHOUT A PROB; HOWEVER ON THIS NEAR PERFECT DAY; THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE LIGHT ACFT TFC OWING TO THE NEAR PERFECT CONDITIONS. MY FLYING WAS OF THE USUAL TYPE OF TKOF TO THE AREA FOR LCL PROFICIENCY FLYING AND THEN ENTERING THE PATTERN FOR PRACTICE. ALTHOUGH DSCNT SEPARATION WAS ALWAYS MAINTAINED; AS WELL AS COM WITH OTHERS IN THE PATTERN; THERE WAS DIFFICULTY IN MANEUVERING DISSIMILAR ACFT AND THEIR RESPECTIVE PARAMETERS. FLYING A CLASSIC VINTAGE JET REQUIRES EXTREME CONCENTRATION AND CAN AT TIMES PROVE QUITE DIFFICULT; ESPECIALLY WHEN VARIOUS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA BTWN ACFT IN THE LNDG PATTERN IS CONSIDERED. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAD TO MANEUVER THE ACFT AND OPEN A SIDE WINDOW CAUSING DISCOMFORT. THESE FLTS ARE USUALLY RELATIVELY SHORT -- AROUND 20 MINS TOTAL WITH ONLY THE LAST 6-8 MINS IN THE PATTERN. SAFETY ISSUE: HIGH PERFORMANCE ACFT MIXED WITH SMALL; SLOW GA IN UNCTLED ENVIRONMENT WITH RESPONSIBILITY OF SAFETY BEING PLACED ON PLTS WHILE THEY ARE MANEUVERING THEIR ACFT IN SUCH AN ENVIRONMENT.
