AN MDT TURBOPROP ON SHORT FINAL SHUT DOWN THE L ENG DUE TO GEAR BOX LOW PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT ON CONTINUOUSLY.
Narrative
THE PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN WAS PERFORMED DURING THE FINAL APCH PHASE OF A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 26L AT ELP ON FEB/XI/97 AT APPROX XA28 LCL HRS. AT APPROX 800 FT AGL THE L-HAND ENG GEAR BOX LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT BEGAN TO FLICKER INTERMITTENTLY. I NOTIFIED THE FO TO PREPARE FOR A POSSIBLE PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN SHOULD THE LIGHT ILLUMINATE STEADY. NO SOONER WAS THIS SAID WHEN THE LIGHT DID ILLUMINATE STEADY AT APPROX 500 FT AGL. A PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN WAS PERFORMED; THE VISUAL APCH CONTINUED; AND A SINGLE ENG LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE ACFT WAS SAFELY TAXIED TO THE RAMP AND SECURED. AN EMER WAS NOT DECLARED NOR WAS ASSISTANCE REQUESTED. DUE TO THE SHUTDOWN OCCURRING ON SUCH SHORT FINAL APCH I DECIDED IT WAS A BETTER COURSE OF ACTION TO COMPLETE THE LNDG RATHER THAN ATTEMPT A SINGLE ENG GAR JUST TO ALLOW TIME TO ADVISE ATC. UPON SECURING THE ACFT AT THE RAMP THE INCIDENT WAS WRITTEN UP IN THE ACFT LOGBOOK; THE MECH WAS ADVISED OF THE SIT; AND THE COMPANY'S DIRECTOR OF OPS WAS NOTIFIED.
