AN ACR B737-200 FLC HAS THE L ENG GENERATOR FAIL ON TKOF. THEY DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED AND LANDED. DURING THE POST FLT INSPECTION IT WAS FOUND THAT THE UNIT WAS WITHOUT OIL.

Narrative

ON TKOF ABOVE 100 KIAS; OBSERVED 1; 1 SECOND FLASH OF MASTER CAUTION AND 'ELEC' ANNUNCIATOR. SHORTLY AFTER GEAR UP L ENG GENERATOR FAILED. R ENG ACCEPTED APPROPRIATE TRANSFER BUS FUNCTIONS. APU INOP AND DEFERRED BY MAINT. L ENG GENERATOR INDICATED LOW OIL PRESSURE. UNSURE OF R ENG GENERATOR CONSTANT SPD DRIVE SERVICING STATUS. DUE TO IMC; ICE AND APPARENT DESIRE OF ORD ATC TO PUT US INTO NORMAL FLOW OF INBOUND TFC; ELECTED TO DECLARE EMER FOR PRIORITY HANDLING. AT 5000 FT MSL ELECTED TO ATTEMPT RESET OF L ENG GENERATOR -- SUCCESSFUL. CONTINUED APCH TO LNDG DUE TO UNCERTAIN FUTURE OF GENERATOR. ALL APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS COMPLETED. FLT ATTENDANTS ADVISED IN FLT; BUT NO CABIN PREPARATION REQUIRED OR DIRECTED. POST FLT REVEALED LOW/NO OIL IN L ENG CONSTANT SPD DRIVE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THIS B737-200 SAID THAT THE MAINT PERSONNEL CONCLUDED THAT THE CONSTANT SPD DRIVE HAD BEEN UNDER OR NOT SERVICED DURING ITS LAST CHK. THEY SERVICED THE UNIT; INSPECTED IT AND RETURNED IT TO THE LINE WITH NO REPAIRS NECESSARY. HE SAID THAT THE FLC'S DECISION TO RETURN IMMEDIATELY WAS A FACTOR IN NOT HAVING TO REPAIR THE CONSTANT SPD DRIVE ACCORDING TO THE MAINT PERSONNEL.
