RPTR SIT OF RPTR'S ACFT COMING INTO CLOSE PROX TO AN AZTEC IT WAS VECTORED TO FOLLOW FOR A VISUAL APCH. RPTR IMPLIES THE VECTORING ANGLE WAS TOO SHARP TO FOLLOW THE AZTEC WHICH WAS MOVING TOWARD THE RPTR L TO R. NMAC.

Narrative

I WAS VECTORED IN AN ARC FROM THE NW TO THE SE OF BWI. I HAD PIPER AZTEC TFC AT MY 11 O'CLOCK POS AND WAS DIRECTED TO MAINTAIN 4000 FT. AS I REACHED A POINT 5-7 NM FROM THE APCH END OF RWY 33 AT BWI; I WAS CLRED TO FOLLOW THE AZTEC AND MAKE A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 33R. I BEGAN A DSCNT AND NOTICED THAT THE AZTEC'S COURSE WAS CLOSING ON MINE. I MADE A STEEP R TURN; NOW FLYING DIRECTLY TOWARDS THE ARPT; KEEPING THE AZTEC IN SIGHT OFF MY L WING. ALTHOUGH I WAS NOW IN LNDG CONFIGN; MY DSNDING AIRSPD WAS GREATER THAN THE AZTEC'S. AT THIS POINT I INFORMED BWI TWR THAT I WAS UNABLE TO FOLLOW THE TFC AND WOULD NEED A R 360 DEG TURN TO DO SO. I WAS TOLD TO STAND BY. AFTER A DELAY; I WAS CLRED TO LAND AHEAD OF THE AZTEC. THE ANGLE OF VECTORING BTWN MY ACFT AND THE AZTEC WAS TOO SHARP. THE AZTEC WAS NOT ONLY MOVING L TO R; BUT FLYING TOWARDS ME. I DID NOT REALIZE THIS WHEN THE CLRNC TO FOLLOW THE TFC WAS GIVEN DUE TO IT BEING NIGHT. MY ALT AT THAT POINT REQUIRED A STEEP DSCNT AND ALTHOUGH I WAS IN LNDG CONFIGN; I WAS TOO FAST TO FOLLOW. BETTER ATC PLANNING WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS OCCURRENCE.
