CE550 ENRTE CRG FL330. MISREAD HIGH ALT CHART BTWN CEW- TLH. THOUGHT SHOULD FLY 122 MI ON 088 DEG RADIAL. ENDED N OF COURSE AND CTR VECTORED BACK TO AIRWAY.

Narrative

CRUISING IN VMC AT FL330 ENRTE FROM DWH TO CRG ON J2 BTWN CEW VOR AND TLH VOR; WE DISCOVERED WE WERE OFF COURSE. WE DISCOVERED WE WERE OFF COURSE WHEN ATC ADVISED US TO TURN 20 DEGS R TO JOIN J2. ALSO; APPROX 1 MIN BEFORE ATC GAVE US THE HDG; I ASKED THE FO TO TUNE IN 288 DEG RADIAL TO TLH VOR TO SET UP FOR WHEN WE INTERCEPTED THE RADIAL. BTWN THE TLH VOR INDICATIONS AND ATC; WE REALIZED WE WERE N OF COURSE AND WE IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED COURSE. IN ANALYZING WHAT HAD OCCURRED AND WHY; WE REALIZED WE HAD THOUGHT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GO 122 NM ON THE 088 DEG RADIAL OFF CEW VOR. WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GO 52 NM AS DEPICTED ON THE HIGH CHART; AND THEN FLY INBOUND ON THE 288 DEG RADIAL TO TLH VOR. I (THE PIC) WAS THE PF BUT WHEN THE FO OPENED THE CHART AND STATED THAT WE WERE TO FLY ON THE CEW VOR 088 DEG RADIAL TO 122 NM; I HAD GLANCED OVER; SAW THE '122' AND THOUGHT THE FO'S STATEMENT TO BE TRUE. THE '122' WAS IN REALITY THE TOTAL DISTANCE BTWN VORS. SOME CONTRIBUTING FACTORS MAY BE THAT I AM A NEW CAPT WITH THE COMPANY AND THAT I HAVE BEEN FLYING A CE560-1R WITH FMS AND WE WERE IN A NON FMS AIRPLANE. I HAVE LEARNED TO TAKE A HARDER LOOK AT RADIALS AND DISTANCES; AND TO DOUBLECHK EVERYTHING WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
