CLRED BUCKEY 4 PHL. FL330. AT JST TOLD TO HOLD AS PUBLISHED ON THE 096 DEG RADIAL 22 DME E. AS WE ENTERED THE HOLD TURNING WBOUND WE WERE CLRED DOWN TO 24000 FT MSL. WE HAD A PM05Z EAC; WHICH WAS 30 MINS IN THE HOLD. WE HAD AN HR'S HOLDING FUEL. I REQUESTED AND WAS CLRED 10 DME LEGS. THE AUTOPLT IS AN OLD MODEL; WHICH IS SLOW TO RESPOND. IN THE DSNDING TURN; I DID NOT MAINTAIN A STANDARD RATE TURN. THIS PLACED ME FARTHER S THAN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN. IN ADDITION THE WIND WAS FROM THE N; PUSHING ME FARTHER S. THE AUTOPLT BRACKETS HDG RATHER SLOPPILY ON ROLLOUT. I ACTUALLY ROLLED OUT WHEN STABLE 10 DEGS TOO FAR L OF THE CORRECT RECIPROCAL COURSE; 276 DEGS. ALL THIS RESULTED IN FLYING TOO FAR S AND W FOR THE TURN IN BACK TO THE HOLDING RADIAL. CTR SAW MY ERROR AND INFORMED ME I WAS TOO FAR W. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED BACK E TO REINTERCEPT THE PROPER RADIAL. BEFORE I REACHED THE HOLDING FIX; CTR CLRED US FOR THE ARR AND APCH; WITH NO FURTHER DELAY. I MADE 2 ERRORS. 1) WHEN THE AUTOPLT WAS CAUSING MORE TROUBLE THAN IT WAS WORTH; I SHOULD HAVE KICKED IT OFF AND HAND FLOWN. 2) IN THIS TYPE OF HOLD I SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED THE EXTENSION IN TIME; NOT DISTANCE. IF I HAD BEEN CLRED ON 2 MIN LEGS; THE RESULT OF THE OTHER ERRORS WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH SMALLER.
