Narrative
ENRTE FROM SJC TO LAX AT FILED CRUISE ALT FL330; APPROX 10-15 DME PAST AVE VOR ON THE SADDE 6 ARR TO LAX. AUTOTHROTTLES ON; WITH PERFORMANCE MGMNT SYS ENGAGED. AUTOPLT ON AND NAVING BY VLF/OMEGA. PLTS BACKING UP NAV WITH VORS. IN CONTACT WITH ZLA. 2 PLTS; 3 FLT ATTENDANTS; 80 PAX AND 1 LAP CHILD. ACFT MD87; P&W JT8D-219. WE HEARD A MUFFLED 'BOOM' FOLLOWED BY AN INCREASING RUMBLE AND A MORE MUFFLED POP. ENG PARAMETERS ON THE L SIDE SHOWED RAPIDLY DECREASING ROTATIONAL SPDS AND EGT RISING TO 800 DEGS. AUTOTHROTTLES DISENGAGED AND L THROTTLE BROUGHT TO IDLE. ATC ADVISED AND ENG SHUTDOWN CHKLIST ACCOMPLISHED. RUMBLING SOUND AND VIBRATION CONTINUED EVEN AFTER ENG SHUTDOWN. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE BRIEFED FOR A NORMAL LNDG AND PAX WERE ADVISED OF OUR SIT BY THE CAPT VIA THE PA. WE CONTINUED FLYING THE SADDE 6 ARR TO LAX AND MET ALL RESTRS. WE WERE SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 24R AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. INITIAL INSPECTION SHOWED NO DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE ENG; FAN BLADES; OR FIRST STAGE COMPRESSOR BLADES. FAILURE WAS INTERNAL.
