Narrative

I AM AN INSTRUCTOR ON THE B747-400 AND WAS GIVING A NEW CAPT IOE FROM THE R SEAT. WHILE ON THE APCH TO AMS; I COPIED THE AMS ATIS; WHICH WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND. I COULD NOT COPY THE ALTIMETER SETTING AT ALL THE FIRST TIME. I LISTENED A SECOND TIME AND CAUGHT '986.' WE WERE BOTH TIRED AFTER A LONG NIGHT FROM THE UNITED STATES (DTW-AMS). I MEANT TO ASK THE CTLR ABOUT THE ALTIMETER SETTING BUT GOT DISTR. WE BOTH SET 29.86 INCHES. THE ACTUAL READING SHOULD HAVE BEEN 0986 HECTOPASCALS. WE WERE GIVEN A DSCNT TO 3000 FT. APCHING 3000 FT INDICATED; THE AMS CTLR ASKED US WHY WE DID NOT LEVEL AT 3000 FT. ACTUALLY WE WERE ABOUT 2500 FT AT THAT TIME. ABOUT THIS SAME TIME OUR TCASII SYS WENT OFF WITH A TA; FOLLOWED BY AN RA. WE IMMEDIATELY CLBED BACK TO THE PROPER 3000 FT AND CONTINUED THE APCH WITH NO OTHER PROBS. I THINK THIS INCIDENT WAS CAUSED BECAUSE OF BEING TIRED; GIVING IOE AND A 2 PLT COCKPIT. (VERY BUSY DURING THE APCH PHASE OF FLT.) A PRINTED ATIS FROM OUR ACAR SYS WILL HELP IN THE FUTURE.
