Narrative

MANY KNOWN HAZARDS IN AVIATION ARE LISTED IN THE CHARTS. I READ AND EVEN CIRCLED AND HIGHLIGHTED THE TAXI HAZARD AT TUS. I THEN PROCEEDED TO TAXI PAST THE INTXN THAT THE HIGHLIGHTED NOTE SAID I SHOULD NOT TAXI PAST. THIS WAS DONE VERY NATURALLY BECAUSE OF THE CONFIGN OF THE RWY AT TUS. THE RWY 11 HAS SUCH A LONG OVERRUN/DISPLACED THRESHOLD; THAT WHEN YOU GET TO THE HAZARD INTXN (A4) IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE ONLY 1/2 WAY TO THE END OF THE RWY. IT IS AN ILLUSION THAT SAYS 'KEEP TAXIING.' THE REAL SOLUTION IS TO PUT A HUGE; VERY NOTICEABLE SIGN AT THE APPROPRIATE SPOT ON THE TXWY. THE TENDENCY TO TAXI PAST IS SO GREAT IT 'NEEDS' A SIGN. THE CHART'S NOTES ARE HELPFUL BUT SOME SCENARIOS NEED MORE SAFEGUARDS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR CALLED BACK AND STATED THAT HE HAD NOT ACTUALLY ENTERED THE CONFINES OF RWY 3/21 AS THE GND CTLR STOPPED HIM IN TIME. HE ALSO FIRMLY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO SIGN ADVISING OF A HOLD SHORT OF RWY 3/21 THAT HE COULD RECALL. FROM THE CTLRS ATTITUDE HE FELT THAT THERE WAS NO PROB AND THEREFORE DID NOT CALL THE CTLR ON THE TELEPHONE AFTER HIS FLT.
