INSTRUCTOR PIREP OF A BIANNUAL FLT REVIEW ON A TWIN SMT AND HOW THINGS CAN GET OUT OF HAND; QUICKLY. PLT OF SMT FAILED TO MAKE A L BASE LEG ENTRY AT ACT AND TWR WANTED A CALL WHEN ON THE GND.

Narrative

WAS GIVING BFR; BIANNUAL FLT REVIEW; DEMONSTRATING PROPER USE OF NEWLY INSTALLED SPOILERS FOR DSCNT. TWR CLRED FLT TO LAND WITH A L BASE ENTRY FOR RWY 19. THERE WAS NO PUSH TO TALK BUTTON ON MY YOKE AND THE HAND MIKE WAS UNPLUGGED. ACFT OWNER WAS FLYING L SEAT AND WORKING RADIO. HE ENTERED L DOWNWIND INSTEAD OF L BASE; CAUSING TWR TO ASK HIM TO CALL THEM UPON LNDG. ARPT WAS UNFAMILIAR TO ACFT OWNER. THE DOWNWIND ENTRY WAS USED IN ORDER TO LOSE ALT; AND COM WAS LOST SHORTLY AFTER LNDG CLRNC WAS RECEIVED. I SHOULD HAVE SUPERVISED STUDENT MORE CLOSELY AND CARRIED MY HAND-HELD TRANSCEIVER. NEVER ASSUME THAT BECAUSE A BIANNUAL FLT REVIEW IS BEING GIVEN TO AN EXPERIENCED PLT IN A COMPLEX PRESSURIZED HIGH PERFORMANCE RECIPROCATING TWIN THAT THE OWNER WON'T GET STUPID ON YOU. IN THE FUTURE I WILL INSTRUCT AS IF EVERY STUDENT IS TRYING TO KILL ME OR GET ME VIOLATED. THIS INCIDENT/EPISODE HAPPENED/DEVELOPED SO QUICKLY THAT THERE WAS NO TIME TO TAKE OVER CTL OF THE ACFT. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE L (#1) ENG HAD BLOWN AN INDUCTION ELBOW AND WAS NORMALLY ASPIRATED. THIS HAPPENED ENRTE. NO BIG DEAL TO ME; BUT IT RATTLED/DISTRACTED THE ACFT OWNER.
