C182 ON NIGHT OP WAS CLRED INTO POS RWY 26 FROM TXWY P. USING TXWY LIGHTS MAKING A HARD L TURN ONTO RWY HIT A BURNED OUT TAXI LIGHT. RETURNED TO THE GATE AND FOUND MINOR DAMAGE TO THE PROP TIP AND DAMAGE TO LENS OF TAXI LIGHT.

Narrative

AFTER BEING CLRED FOR TKOF; I BEGAN MY TAXI FROM THE HOLD SHORT POINT TOWARDS THE RWY. TXWY P IS A HIGHSPD TXWY FOR ARRS OFF ONT'S RWY 26L. THEREFORE; I HAD TO MAKE A HARD R TURN FIRST; THEN TAXI APPROX 150 FT AND MAKE A L TURN TO DEPART OFF OF RWY 26L. THE OPERATING CONDITIONS WERE DARK; WITH ONLY TXWY LIGHTS; USED AS MY PRIMARY MEANS OF GUIDANCE. THE HIGH 'CROWN' OF THE TXWY CTRLINE ALSO HAMPERED VISIBILITY. AS I BEGAN MY TURN TO THE L TOWARDS THE DEP RWY; I SAW 2 BLUE TXWY LIGHTS TO MY FAR L. THE TWR ALSO ADVISED ME THAT THERE WAS ALSO AN AIRLINER ON FINAL FOR MY RWY. I CHKED THE AREA AHEAD OF ME; AND NOTICED THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED BLUE TXWY LIGHTS FORMED AN APPARENT PATH TO THE RWY. AS I BEGAN MY L TURN; AND I TURNED MY HEAD TO MY ACFT'S 4 - 5 O'CLOCK POS TO CHK ON ANY TFC BEHIND ME; BEFORE I TOOK POS ON THE RWY; I THEN HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE GLASS BREAKING BENEATH ME. I REQUESTED TWR'S PERMISSION TO RETURN TO THE PARKING RAMP. LATER; EXAMINATION BY MYSELF; AND BY OTHERS; DETERMINED I HAD APPARENTLY TAXIED INTO AN APPROX 12 INCH ABOVE- SURFACE TXWY LIGHT; THAT WAS MIDWAY BTWN THE 2 TXWY LIGHTS I USED AS REF TO THE RWY; AND SEVERAL FT E (IN MY PREVIOUS PATH OF TRAVEL). ONLY THE OUTER BLUE LENS OF THE TAXI LIGHTS WAS DAMAGED; THE BULB AND STAND WERE INTACT. EXAMINATION OF THE INVOLVED LIGHT BULB REVEALED TO EXAMINERS THAT THE BULB WAS PREVIOUSLY BURNED OUT. 1 BLADE OF THE ACFT'S 3-BLADED PROP INCURRED MINOR TIP DAMAGE. THE ARPT OPS PERSONNEL REPLACED THE BULB AND LENS. REINFORCED MY NEED FOR INCREASED AWARENESS WHEN TAXIING IN AND AROUND DARK ENVIRONMENTS; AND FURTHER TO BE ALERT FOR UNEXPECTED HAZARDS.
