Narrative
AFTER COMPLETING 3 FULL STOP TAXI BACK TFC PATTERNS ON RWY 7R; I REQUESTED DAB TWR A RAMP WHERE I COULD GET OFF AND SEND MY STUDENT ON HIS SECOND SOLO FLT. TWR INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI FROM INTXN W OFF RWY 7R TO TXWY S EBOUND TO A VACANT RAMP N SIDE OF TXWY S. ON TXWY S I STOPPED AND TWR ADVISED TO TURN L ONTO RAMP AREA. AS I WAS TAXIING ONTO THE RAMP ENTRANCE; I WAS BRIEFING MY STUDENT ON HOW TO GET BACK TO THE RWY AND WHERE TO PICK ME UP ON HIS RETURN. AT THIS TIME I ALSO NOTICED A RED SIGN BOARD ON THE L SIDE OF RAMP ENTRANCE; WHICH I WAS TRYING TO READ. I WAS ON THE TXWY SLIGHTLY TO THE R OF CTRLINE. AS I WAS VISUALLY CLRING THE R SIDE; I NOTICED WE WERE TOO CLOSE TO THE CORNER POST OF BOUNDARY FENCE; BUT COULD NOT STOP IN TIME TO PREVENT CONTACT. THE R WING WAS DAMAGED ABOUT 12 INCHES FROM THE TIP. LEADING EDGE WAS PUSHED IN ABOUT 2 INCHES. I IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED TWR AND THEY SENT AN ARPT PERSON TO INSPECT DAMAGE. HE HELPED TO PUSH IT BACK AND THEN ONTO RAMP. I CONTACTED GND FOR CLRNC TO TAXI WHICH I RECEIVED AND WAS ADVISED TO CALL TWR WHEN I GOT BACK TO BASE. I CALLED SUPVR AND HE ASKED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE AND TOLD ME I WAS IN A NON MOVEMENT AREA. BELOW IS A SKETCH OF INCIDENT AREA. MY CONCLUSION IS THAT MY VISUAL SCAN WAS NOT APPROPRIATE; BUT SINCE I WAS ON THE TXWY ABOUT MAYBE 12 INCHES FROM CTRLINE; THE FENCE POST SHOULD HAVE BEEN NO FACTOR. I BELIEVE THAT POST IS A HAZARD AS IT IS TOO CLOSE TO THE RAMP ENTRANCE. AN INSTRUCTOR COLLEAGUE'S STUDENT ALSO HAD A NEAR HIT TO THAT PARTICULAR POST (HIS COMMENTS). I HAD A SOLO STUDENT ALSO ENTERING THE RAMP AREA; NEARLY STRIKING THE SAME POLE. I FEEL THAT THE FENCE IS TOO CLOSE TO THE ENTRANCE.
