C208 AMPHIBIAN ACFT. RPTR PLT WAS RECEIVING INSTRUCTION AND INSTRUCTOR CONTRIBUTED TO LNDG SHORT; BECAUSE HE WAS HOLDING FORWARD YOKE PRESSURE AND TOLD RPTR TO LAND AT VERY END OF RWY. LNDG GEAR BROKE OFF. ACFT SKIDDED ON R FLOAT.

Narrative

I WAS BEING GIVEN INSTRUCTION IN A SEAPLANE THAT WAS NEW TO ME. AT THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE I WAS INSTRUCTED TO LAND ON THE VERY BEGINNING OF A 2000 FT HARD SURFACE RWY. AS I WAS LINED UP ON FINAL; I PLANNED ON TOUCHING DOWN APPROX 10-15 FT FROM THE APCH END. THE OTHER PLT HAD PUT SOME PRESSURE (FORWARD) ON THE YOKE AND TOLD ME TO LAND ON THE VERY END. SO I HELD THE DSCNT ANGLE THAT THE OTHER PLT HAD INSTRUCTED ME TO HOLD. WHEN WE HAD GOTTEN CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE RWY; I KNEW IT WOULD BE SHORT SO I HAD GIVEN SOME MORE PWR TO THE ENG; BUT IT DIDN'T CARRY US FAR ENOUGH. WE LANDED ON THE UNFINISHED SECTION OF RWY AT THE VERY BEGINNING. THE LNDG GEAR HAD BROKEN OFF CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO SKID ON ITS FLOATS (R SIDE ONLY). THE TYPE OF ACFT WAS A C208 AMPHIBIAN. THE APCH WAS OVER WATER TO A SHORT RWY. I BELIEVE IF I HAD KEPT THE ORIGINAL ANGLE OF DSCNT TO THE RWY WE WOULD HAVE LANDED WITH ENOUGH RWY TO STOP. IT'S POSSIBLE THAT THE WATER MAY HAVE GIVEN US SOME FALSE IMPRESSIONS THAT WE WERE HIGHER THAN WE EXPECTED.
