MLG FLC TAKES WRONG AIRWAY ON DEP. ATC QUESTIONS THEIR RTE AND DISCOVERS ERROR BUT THEN CLRS THEM ON CURRENT RTE.

Narrative

I HAD BEEN JUNIOR ASSIGNED AS CAPT OF FLT FROM RNO TO SEA. I MET THE INCOMING FLT AND DISCUSSED THE STATUS OF THE ACFT WITH THE DEPARTING CAPT. I ENTERED THE CABIN AND INTRODUCED MYSELF TO THE FO. HE HAD ALREADY COMPLETED HIS COCKPIT SETUP AND RECEIVED THE IFR CLRNC. I PERFORMED MY COCKPIT DUTIES AND WE COMPLETED THE CHKLIST PRIOR TO PUSHBACK. MY FO INFORMED ME OF THE DEP SID (MUSTANG 4 DEP AS FILED WHICH DEPARTS FMG VOR ON J5 TO LKV VOR). IT WAS THE FO'S LEG; SO I MONITORED AND ASSISTED HIM AS HE FLEW THE DEP. UPON REACHING THE FIRST DEP FIX; I INFORMED THE FO OF THE VOR BEARING TO LKV FROM FMG VOR. WE SET THE BEARING AND PROCEEDED UP J5 AIRWAY ON CLB OUT. WHILE CLBING; ZOB ASKED US IF WE WERE GOING TO LMT VOR. I TOLD ZOA WE WERE PROCEEDING ON J5 TO LKV AS WE WERE FLT PLANNED. HE THEN ASKED HOW RNO HAD CLRED US. I THEN ASKED THE FO WHO CHKED HIS WRITTEN CLRNC AND HE TOLD ME WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ON J92 TO LMT. I INFORMED CTR AND ASKED IF HE WANTED US TO PROCEED ON J92 TO LMT AND HE RECLRED US TO LKV ON J5. I THINK AFTER RECEIVING A CLRNC IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE CREW MEMBER GIVE THE OTHER CREW MEMBER A MORE DETAILED BRIEFING OF THE ENTIRE CLRNC INCLUDING THE SID AND AIRWAYS TO BE FLOWN AND NOT JUST A SID AND AS FILED. THIS PROC PUT THE OTHER PLT THAT IS BEING BRIEFED AN OPPORTUNITY TO DETERMINE IF THE FLT IS GOING TO BE FLYING A DIFFERENT RTE OTHER THAN THE RTE THAT WAS FILED.
