AN MLG DESIGNATED AS A LIFEGUARD FLT; MAKES A FAST; HURRIED APCH INTO ORD; IL. THE HURRIED APCH RESULTS IN A GAR AS THE FIRST APCH IS TO THE WRONG RWY.

Narrative

FLT WAS ACR FLT XXX DESIGNATED AS A 'LIFEGUARD' FLT DUE TO TRANSPORTATION OF HUMAN ORGANS. APCHING CHICAGO FROM MADISON; WI; WE WERE TOLD TO FLY A HEADING FOR RWY 9L AT O'HARE BY THE SECOND APCH CTLR (APPARENTLY TO EXPEDITE THE ARR DUE TO THE 'LIFEGUARD' DESIGNATION). THE NORMAL LNDG RWY AT THAT TIME WAS RWY 9R. THE APCH TO RWY 9L WAS BRIEFED AND SET UP. THE FINAL INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO MAINTAIN 3500 FT UNTIL ESTABLISHED ON THE LOC; CLRED THE APCH (NOT SURE IF THEY ACTUALLY SAID 'ILS RWY 9R'); MAINTAIN 17000 FT UNTIL DEANA (FAF FOR RWY 9R); TWR AT DEANA 120.75.' WE DID NOT CATCH THE FACT THAT WE WERE CLRED FOR A DIFFERENT APCH THAN THE APCH CTLR HAD PREVIOUSLY SAID. WE ARE ALSO NOT SURE IF WE TALKED TO 2 OR 3 APCH CTLRS. O'HARE TWR SENT US AROUND JUST INSIDE OF 'LANSE' AFTER 'DEANA' WAS RPTED AND THEN CORRECTED 'LANSE' IS THE FAF FOR RWY 9L. WE WERE IMC AT THE GAR INITIATION AND APPROX 40 NM FROM THE RWY AND APPROX 1500 FT AGL. GAR AND APCH TO RWY 4R WERE UNEVENTFUL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 375731: WE WERE SWITCHED TO ANOTHER APCH CTLR AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED FOR THE ILS AND TOLD TO CONTACT TWR APCHING THE FAF. WE INTERCEPTED THE RWY 9L ILS AND WHEN WE CONTACTED TWR THEY INFORMED US THEY WERE NOT EXPECTING US; THAT WE SHOULD BE ON RWY 9R; AND TO EXECUTE CLBOUT. THE MISSED APCH WAS UNEVENTFUL AND WE CAME BACK FOR A LNDG. WE WERE IMC. WITHOUT LISTENING TO THE TAPES WE CANNOT BE SURE BUT I BELIEVE WE WERE FIXATED (AFTER BEING TOLD TO EXPECT RWY 9L) ON RWY 9L AND INTERCEPTED THAT FINAL BY MISTAKE. ALTHOUGH DUE TO CONFUSION BTWN THE CTLRS ON APCH AND TWR WE MIGHT HAVE BEEN TOLD JUST TO INTERCEPT THE ILS; WHICH WE THOUGHT WAS TO RWY 9L. EITHER WAY THERE WAS UNCERTAINTY AND WE SHOULD HAVE CLARIFIED IT.
